A boast by a Republican House lawmaker about his plans for July 4th left a former member of Donald Trump’s first administration briefly speechless on MS NOW and conceding the MAGA Texan has never been known for being very smart.

In an interview on the Capitol steps, Rep. Troy Nehls claimed, “Over the 4th, I’m going to get me a couple of big lobster tails, I’m going to get me some nice rib-eyes. I’m going to sit in my backyard with my family, my neighbors, and we’re going to be enjoying the 4th, celebrating 250 years, the birthday [of America],” after blowing off a question about the affordability crisis Americans are facing daily.
Nehls was pressed on whether voters living “paycheck to paycheck” can afford the same standard of living, and he responded by questioning whether they “work as hard as I do.”
After watching the clip with MS NOW host Antonia Hylton, former Trump White House comms official Sarah Matthews claimed that clip will come back to haunt Republicans in November when Nehls will be off the ballot because he is retiring after three terms, having qualified for a congressional pension.

“I wish I had an answer for that and could understand the inner workings of that congressman’s brain, but I just think that Troy Nehls is clearly not that bright, because there’s no reason you would say something like that unless you quite literally do not have any amount of, any ounce of empathy for struggling Americans right now,” Matthews observed.
She continued, “Look, millions of Americans across this country are struggling right now in this economy, whether it’s skyrocketing gas prices because of Trump’s war of choice with Iran, or inflation causing the cost of everything to rise. And he goes out there and makes some claim like that and says, ‘Oh well, maybe these Americans aren’t working hard enough or working as hard as me.’”
