A Nobel-winning economist sounded the alarm on a Supreme Court ruling that he fears isn’t getting enough attention.

Paul Krugman wrote in a Wednesday Substack piece that after the Supreme Court wrapped up its term, more attention was going towards its defeat of Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship than a more ‘astonishing’ decision in the case of Trump v. Slaughter.

“Various MAGA-adjacent parties, along with willfully blind centrists, are trying to sweep this ruling under the rug, hoping that the public doesn’t understand its meaning,” Krugman wrote. “The Court has now stripped regulatory agencies of their independence from Trump’s whims and corrupt practices.”

The case centers on a nearly century-old legal precedent that bars presidents from firing Federal Trade Commission commissioners without cause. It stems from Trump’s firing last year of two Democratic commissioners, which Trump’s lawyers argued was in his power based on the unitary executive theory.

“You don’t have to take my word for how much this travesty matters,” Krugman said about the court’s 6-3 ruling on Monday in favor of Trump. “The wannabe dictator is fully aware of how much the Roberts Court has undermined democracy in his favor. And he’s celebrating.”

Krugman backed up his “wannabe dictator” claim by pointing to a Truth Social post from Monday in which Trump touts the decision as a “BIG WIN” and says “it is such an Honor to be the sitting President who won this Historic and Unprecedented Ruling.”

“This Court decision is fundamentally about empowering Trump,” Krugman continued. “The Court’s decision effectively eliminates government by professional civil servants who do their best to implement the law with government by henchmen and lackeys who will do whatever Dear Leader wants.”

He concluded, “The stench of corruption and dictator-worship is overpowering.”
