Vice President JD Vance was put on the spot by veteran journalist Margaret Sullivan on Tuesday as she wondered why he keeps picking fights he will lose and that make him look like he is off his rocker.

As Sullivan wrote, in recent weeks alone, Vance has lectured Pope Leo on Catholic theology — picking a fight with one of the world’s most beloved religious figures. He’s also declared the Watergate scandal and its cover-up was “no big deal,” suggesting it was absurd that Nixon’s criminal acts brought down his presidency.
Sullivan pointed out that Vance “clearly wants to be president; he’s as ambitious as they come,” before asking, “Why, then, does he keep saying such loony things?”

“What exactly is all this craziness intended to accomplish?” she elaborated before proposing, “Why would a guy who wants to be president make a practice of unnecessarily insulting huge swaths of the electorate and going up against a hugely popular American-born pope? Strange as it seems, his outrageous comments – presented as if they are the product of a thoughtful, serious person – are no accident.”
According to the columnist, Vance nowadays has a “desperate quality” about him.
Pointing out that the “American citizens are not buying Vance’s act,” she reported that his popularity has plummeted since taking office and now is notable as “a historically unpopular vice-president,” but it may make him “the obvious successor to Trump. And that, after all, is exactly what JD Vance is angling for.”
