The appearance of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s wife in the latest attempt to quell rumors of the Kentucky Republican’s demise has had the opposite effect.

According to a report from the Daily Beast, an acquaintance of Elaine Chao pointed out that the former Commerce Secretary under President Donald Trump wouldn’t be caught dead dressed like she was for a photo expected to get wide distribution.
McConnell’s office released a damage-control photo Monday showing the 84-year-old senator smiling alongside his wife Elaine Chao, 73, in an attempt to tamp down growing concerns about McConnell’s health and mental acuity.
According to the report, the photo drew the attention of Jeff Yang, of the “They Call Us Bruce” podcast, who claims he has known members of the Chao family since his college days.
As he wrote on Bluesky, accompanied by a screenshot of Chao smiling next to her husband: “I can’t imagine Elaine, one of the most put-together people in existence, releasing a pic wearing a thin shirt over a visible black bra, UNTUCKED.”

Pointing to the pink-on-white printed blouse she was wearing, Yang reportedly used reverse image search and discovered her top was sold at Chico’s, a popular mall hangout for tweens and teens, and resells for approximately $12.
Yang concluded, “Most implausible aspect of the image: ELAINE IS DEPICTED WEARING A $12 CHICO’S SHIRT. HOLY CRAP SHE WOULD RATHER DIE.”
Pressed by commenters on Bluesky to contact members of the family and get more details, he responded, “I haven’t been in touch with the surviving sister I know for years, and this isn’t the kind of thing you lead with for someone you haven’t seen for a while. Also, the family is tight knit and private and I doubt she’d want to comment.”

He then added: “Regardless everything will unravel soon.”
