Keyllanne Conway stammers on bleak midterm outlook for GOP — then shifts to blame voters

Republican strategist Kellyanne Conway stammered through her answer Sunday when confronted on Fox News about the unpopularity of President Donald Trump’s war against Iran, only to later blame voters for what she called their “give-me-benefits-now mentality.”

Trump’s former campaign manager and counselor, Conway was asked by Fox News’ Rachel Campos-Duffy about her thoughts on the bipartisan unpopularity of the president’s botched war in Iran.

“You’re a pollster, I know you’re looking at the poll numbers of how people feel about this war, and they’re not great,” Campos-Duffy said. “I spoke earlier today with a couple young people: both left and right said ‘we don’t like the war.’”

While Conway acknowledged that “nobody likes war,” she defended the military operation as necessary in a jumbled answer.

“We want to keep it over there, not over here, and the president is doing what he’s doing in the Middle East, in – Mid-east – to help people in the Midwest… longer term,” Conway said.

“This president takes the long view on everything, and he has said he – uh – I’ll say he can’t put war on an egg timer. We’ve been there for six months, everybody would like it wrapped up – it needs to be wrapped up successfully and completely for us to feel that the next president of the United States doesn’t face a nuclear capable Iran.”

Conway’s remarks regarding the Trump administration’s objective of ensuring Iran never develops a nuclear weapon were undercut by Trump himself, who, according to the Wall Street Journal, had privately floated the idea to senior aides that he was willing to “walk away without a nuclear deal.”

Conway then shifted to blaming voters’ mentality for the war’s deep unpopularity.

“President Trump’s numbers were always higher than his polls reflected, and continue to be! We’re confusing vibes with votes,” Conway said. “Whether it’s the midterms and the Iran war, or it’s data centers, we’re in a ‘Door Dash-Uber give-me-benefits-now’ mentality, and that’s tricky.”
