A new column offers an intriguingly optimistic prediction about President Donald Trump’s reaction to a potential Republican midterm wipeout.

The Bulwark’s Andrew Egger argued the 80-year-old president is already bracing for a midterm defeat and will likely lash out at Republicans in Congress when it happens, pointing to his own social media activity as evidence.
“Trump’s chances of further major legislation will have gone up in smoke, and he may well be staring down the barrel of two years of pure legislative pain: no ability to get his nominees confirmed, no ability to stave off messaging bills aimed at his weaknesses, no way to avoid constant investigative scrutiny,” Egger wrote.
“He’ll be furious. He’ll be crashing out. And we already know exactly what he’ll be saying,” the columnist added.
The column highlighted a Truth Social post Trump shared this week from MAGA influencer Matt Van Swol, who warned that GOP voters are “REALLY MAD” that promised reforms haven’t materialized. “I’m very worried the GOP is sleepwalking toward a midterm reckoning they don’t see coming,” Van Swol wrote, adding that “frustration has consequences” if congressional Republicans don’t produce tangible results before November.
Egger identified Trump’s decision to amplify that message, roughly 69 days before the Nov. 4 election, as a sign he already senses his party is in trouble.

“For all his happy talk, it seems like he’s really starting to feel like his party is blowing it,” Egger wrote. “And, of course, he’s deeply convinced it’s anybody else’s fault but his.”
Polling from analyst G. Elliott Morris shows Trump’s approval on border security, previously a strength, has turned negative at minus-5, and that 49 percent of voters strongly disapprove of his overall performance compared with just 17 percent who strongly approve — which Egger described as an “enthusiasm gap” working against Republicans.
Republican officials, including RNC Chair Joe Gruters, have reinforced Trump’s belief that the party’s midterm fate rests entirely on his personal popularity, which Egger said will be amplified again at an RNC-organized midterm convention scheduled for next month in Dallas.
“Trump and Co. will make the case again: Your Republican candidates are good because they’re for Trump,” the columnist wrote.
“If this message fails — and it’s easy to see why it would — Trump’s rage will be incandescent,” Egger concluded. “I go out there and bust my a– for you worthless lumps and you still can’t get over the finish line! The president is never one to keep these things to himself. The post-midterms crashout will be breathtaking — and a powerful sign of good things to come.”
