Gas prices have remained uncomfortably high ever since President Donald Trump began his war in Iran. But diesel fuel specifically is about to hit an alarming milestone, oil industry analyst Patrick De Haan posted to X on Wednesday.

“Diesel history is about to be made,” wrote De Haan. “$6/gal nationally — never seen before, days away, it’s now in the pipeline, unavoidable.”
Diesel is critical to the trucking industry and the rail industry, which rely on it to ship goods across the country. A spike in diesel prices could inflate the cost of transportation of goods and services.
The forecast from De Haan, who has been closely following fuel price trends under multiple administrations, follows months of turmoil in the energy sector, driven in part by the Iran war shutting down safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz, which carries around 20 percent of world oil traffic.

In response to the growing price tag, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has tried to spin the situation in a way that makes Trump look more favorable.
“When you look at diesel, you have to look at Russia and Ukraine,” said Duffy in a recent Fox News interview. “Russia was a major exporter, the second-biggest exporter in the world, of diesel. They stopped their exports, so that puts pressure on the global market. But President Trump has pushed American energy dominance; we are producing more energy now than in the past.”
