The subject came up while she was interviewing Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), a lawmaker himself locked in a legal battle with the Trump administration over its efforts to mete out military punishment for his instruction for soldiers to refuse illegal orders.

“We’ll wait and see what actions they take,” Wallace told Kelly. “But to your point about his authoritarian power grab happening in full view and in the context of daily news cycles. That being said, she asked Kelly, “I wonder what your counsel is for people who are going to still be trying to get the story out at a time when Trump is doing everything to keep the truth from emerging.”

The important thing, Kelly replied, is for all these outlets to “double down.”

“You and CNN and Politico and other news organizations on the accountability part of your job, keeping any government, this one, the one before it, regardless of who is in the White House,” said Kelly. These outlets, he said, have a job “to inform the American people,” and even if that just got “a lot harder … I hope under these adverse circumstances that you’re in, you will figure out ways to to report to your viewers what is happening, you know, inside this government.”
