As the multi-day festival<\/u> organized in part<\/u> by President Donald Trump designed to celebrate the United States\u2019 250th anniversary continues to fall apart<\/u>, former presidential speechwriter David Frum flagged on Sunday what he believed was behind the event\u2019s ever-increasing<\/u> list of problems.<\/p>\n

Dubbed the Great American State Fair, the event was organized by the Trump-linked organization Freedom 250, with Trump himself being “actively involved\u201d in the process. A live music concert was initially planned for the event but may be cancelled after \u201cnearly all<\/u>\u201d performers backed out after learning of the event\u2019s connections to Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might have thought that presiding over such a celebration would be an easy success for Trump. He is a showman after all,\u201d Frum wrote in an analysis published Sunday in The Atlantic. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe loves parades and extravaganzas. It was all an easy layup, a gimme, a chance for a now-unpopular second-term president to reinvent himself as the leader of all of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration scrambled<\/u> in the wake of performers bailing on the event<\/u> en masse, with Trump later proposing<\/u> to replace the artists with himself, and at an event to be held at the \u201csame time\u201d and \u201csame location\u201d as the fair, except with \u201conly great patriots invited.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, as the chaos continues to unfold, Frum believes he knows exactly why the event has appeared to crumble.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing he had to do was \u2013 for once in his life \u2013 not act like an insane egomaniac,” Frum wrote. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frum argued that the event\u2019s failure was all but admitted to by Trump, citing a social media post the president published on Saturday evening, which Frum described as an \u201cindictment of his own program.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCancel it,\u201d Trump wrote<\/u>, referring to the Great American State Fair.<\/p>\n

Frum continued, \u201cTrump knows he has botched the anniversary. He says so himself.\u201d<\/p>\n
