John J. Kelly, who served<\/u> as the U.S. attorney for the District of New Mexico from 1993 to 2000, was exposed<\/u> in April for his previously undisclosed ties with Jeffrey Epstein, and on Tuesday, veteran journalist Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez accused<\/u> the state\u2019s \u201celites\u201d of continuing to \u201cprotect him\u201d amid the ongoing investigation<\/u> into activity at Epstein\u2019s sprawling New Mexico compound<\/u>.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Kelly was asked by a local news outlet<\/u> why his name had appeared in Epstein\u2019s contact directory, often referred to as his \u201clittle black book,\u201d and told the ABC News affiliate that he had \u201cno clue.\u201d However, as uncovered by Valdes-Rodriguez, a published by the Justice Department revealed that Epstein had given Kelly \u201cpower of attorney\u201d to facilitate his purchase of Epstein\u2019s infamous New Mexico compound known as Zorro Ranch<\/u>.<\/p>\n

It was during Kelly\u2019s tenure as the top federal prosecutor in New Mexico that then-16-year-old Annie Farmer filed a report<\/u> with the FBI about being sexually abused by Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell at Zorro Ranch \u2013 a tip that \u201cprotocol would require to be forwarded to Kelly\u2019s offices,\u201d Valdes-Rodriguez previously wrote<\/u>, and one that ultimately went \u201cignored<\/u>,\u201d per The New York Times.<\/p>\n

And yet, despite Kelly having \u201cdirectly [contradicted] his account of barely knowing Epstein,\u201d Valdes-Rodriguez argued, the ex-prosecutor remains<\/u> on Albuquerque\u2019s Ethics Board as a mayoral appointee, and no public announcements have been made regarding plans to question him, including from the newly created legislative committee<\/u> with subpoena power dedicated solely to investigating potential crimes that occurred at Zorro Ranch.<\/p>\n

\u201cKelly is still on the ethics board. And the state\u2019s political and media elites continue to protect him, as he appears to have protected Epstein,\u201d Valdes-Rodriguez wrote in a report<\/u> published on her Substack Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat none of these institutions appear to have done is look at the documents themselves. They have chosen, instead, to take Kelly\u2019s word. That\u2019s how s— works in New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Valdes-Rodriguez\u2019s April report exposing Kelly\u2019s past ties to Epstein, the former federal prosecutor has claimed<\/u> that he \u201cnever met\u201d Epstein, and that he \u201cwas never aware of any activities beyond the real estate transaction,\u201d the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. However, Kelly\u2019s \u201crecord of inaction against Epstein,\u201d Valdes-Rodriguez argued, was \u201cnot insinuation,\u201d but \u201cfact.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn J. Kelly has a story to tell about Jeffrey Epstein, about Zorro Ranch, about what his office did and did not do with the reports that accumulated there over seven years,\u201d Valdes-Rodriguez wrote. \u201cBut because New Mexico is New Mexico, he has not been asked to tell it under oath. And he probably never will be.\u201d<\/p>\n
