Mike Pence faced some pushback on CNN in his defense of President Donald Trump’s policy priorities.<\/p>\n

Trump’s former vice president appeared Wednesday morning on “CNN News Central” to promote his new book, “What Conservatives Believe: Rediscovering the Conservative Conscience,” and he justified some of the president’s policies, including tariffs, that he personally did not support.<\/p>\n

“Look, the president comes by his<\/span> support for tariffs honestly,” Pence said. “I<\/span> mean, he has<\/span> supported broad-based tariffs<\/span> throughout his career. Now,<\/span> during our administration, we<\/span> use tariffs as a means of<\/span> leverage, the threat of tariffs.<\/span> That’s how we renegotiated<\/span> NAFTA, that’s how we we<\/span> renegotiated a trade deal with<\/span> South Korea, and we’re working<\/span> on trade deals around the world b<\/span>efore we left office. But this<\/span> administration is different with<\/span> the ‘liberation day’ tariffs<\/span> against friend and foe alike.<\/span> The Supreme Court turned them<\/span> back.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence pointed out the U.S. Trade Representative announced another round of tariffs this week, and host Kate Bolduan interjected.<\/span><\/p>\n

“No one’s making<\/span> Trump do anything, right?” she said. “<\/span>I mean,<\/span> Donald <\/span>Trump is supercharging<\/span> that populism.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence disagreed and suggested that outside voices were nudging Trump toward right-wing populism.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He comes by that very<\/span> honestly, he really does,” Pence said. “But<\/span> I would tell you, <\/span>this new cabinet, that new<\/span> voices, I mean, the idea of<\/span> literally having the federal<\/span> government take a percentage<\/span> share of American<\/span> businesses would have, I think,<\/span> never even been discussed in the<\/span> first Trump administration, and<\/span> it comes from the outside.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bolduan interjected again to fact check the former vice president.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He’s so excited about it,” Bolduan said. “He<\/span> just said in an interview he<\/span> wished he’d taken a bigger<\/span> stake in it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence chuckled and begged to differ.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I get that, I understand it,<\/span> but the point that I make in the<\/span> book is that Republicans have<\/span> always believed in limited<\/span> government and free market<\/span> economics, in free enterprise,” he said.<\/span> “Those policies, big government<\/span> policies that have made their<\/span> way into this administration<\/span> are at odds with that<\/span> long-standing tradition, <\/span>but here’s the thing I<\/span> would say to you, there’s no<\/span> question in my mind that the<\/span> president remains the leader of<\/span> the Republican Party and<\/span> Republican primary voters.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The former vice president praised Trump’s success in getting his favored candidates elected in GOP primaries around the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I<\/span> think that comes from the fact<\/span> that Republicans are grateful <\/span>that for 10 years, Donald Trump<\/span> has been willing to fight the<\/span> radical left,” Pence said. “He did it during<\/span> our years and through the<\/span> lawfare times of the Biden<\/span> administration and since.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bolduan pointed out that Pence’s book explicitly was intended to nudge the Republican Party back to its pre-Trump norms, and asked what part of the MAGA agenda he did not want to endure.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I want a<\/span> lot of it to endure,” Pence insisted. “Look, I<\/span> love my country, I want to see<\/span> the president be successful. But<\/span> what I don’t want to see is<\/span> people on the populist right <\/span>conflating the<\/span> president’s personal popularity<\/span> with with a new agenda that’s<\/span> far afield from the conservative<\/span> agenda, and that’s where I why<\/span> I wrote ‘What Conservatives<\/span> Believe.'”<\/span><\/p>\n
