President Donald Trump faced a new GOP Senate \u201crebellion\u201d early Friday, and one that included \u201cmore than just the usual suspects\u201d in what Punchbowl News described<\/u> as a \u201cpotential preview of what\u2019s to come as Republicans seek distance from Trump with November approaching.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate Republicans failed to advance a bill to extend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act<\/u> (FISA), a law that permits national intelligence agencies to monitor overseas communications without a warrant, including those of Americans. A priority for Trump, the bill failed to advance due to insufficient GOP support, which itself was \u201cprompted by\u201d Trump\u2019s nomination<\/u> of Bill Pulte \u2014 who has no intelligence or national security experience \u2014 to serve as director of National Intelligence, Punchbowl News reported<\/u>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he thinks about the impact on this and the timing,\u201d said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) of Trump, Punchbowl News reported. \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s connecting that. Which is unfortunate, because [FISA] really has had an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vote to advance the bill to extend FISA ultimately failed with a vote of 47-52, and that followed an 18-hour marathon session in the Senate to advance the GOP reconciliation bill to fund federal immigration agencies, one that Punchbowl News described as an \u201carduous process\u201d that, again, faced GOP opposition prompted by Trump\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe marathon voting session on the reconciliation bill laid bare the consequences<\/u> of Trump\u2019s recent moves, from the toppling of two GOP incumbents to the political toxicity of the White House\u2019s handling of an \u2018anti-weaponization<\/u>\u2019 fund for his political allies,\u201d Punchbowl News\u2019 report read.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was supposed to be a straightforward reconciliation bill to fund immigration enforcement became a major headache for Senate GOP leaders because of this controversial fund. Republicans and Democrats alike tried to add language to the measure to ban the fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Senate Majority Leader John Thune shared a blunt assessment as to who carried the blame for the Senate GOP\u2019s challenging night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis would have been done several hours ago if we weren\u2019t having to deal with some of the issues around the fund, which doesn\u2019t exist \u2014 which is the point we\u2019re making,\u201d a \u201cfrustrated\u201d Thune said, Punchbowl News reported.<\/p>\n
