WASHINGTON \u2014 Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s stunning defeat after 16 years leading Hungary with an iron fist has elicited cheers in some corners of the nation\u2019s capital this week, even as many Republicans would rather discuss anything but the strongman President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement counted as their own for the past decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was glad to see the people of Hungary stand up and send them packing,\u201d Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) told Raw Story. \u201cAnd we hope to do the same thing for the Trump administration’s congressional enablers in 2026.\u201d <\/p>\n

The blow to what has been the steady march of the global far-right has Warnock and other political watchers praying the tides are finally turning back in democracy\u2019s favor. <\/p>\n

\u201cMany of the repressive, authoritarian movements that we saw in the 20th Century come back like the mutant strain of an ugly virus in the 21st Century,\u201d Warnock said. \u201cSo I\u2019m happy to see the people of Hungary stand up in the way that they did.\u201d <\/p>\n

While the political left is cheering, many on the American right are now distancing themselves from, arguably, the Trump White House\u2019s favorite authoritarian abroad. <\/p>\n

\u201cSad\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

After traveling to Hungary and campaigning with Orb\u00e1n during the final days of the election, Vice President JD Vance told reporters he was \u201csad\u201d after the wannabe dictator lost to P\u00e9ter Magyar and his Tisza Party. <\/p>\n

But in some corners of Capitol Hill, Republican leaders don\u2019t even want to speak Orb\u00e1n\u2019s name. <\/p>\n

\u201cWere you following Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s race at all?\u201d Raw Story asked Sen. James Risch (R-ID), the Republican chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Risch told Raw Story. <\/p>\n

\u201cWere you surprised to see Vice President Vance go over there?\u201d Raw Story inquired. <\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Risch replied. <\/p>\n

\u201cIs it bad for Trump’s brand that he lost?\u201d Raw Story pressed. <\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve gone as far as I want to go in this interview,\u201d Risch said. <\/p>\n

Risch was far from alone. <\/p>\n

\u201cWas the [Hungarian election] on your radar?\u201d Raw Story asked Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS). <\/p>\n

\u201cOh boy,\u201d Marshall said as the doors on a senators-only elevator pulled shut on him and Raw Story. \u201cYou know, I read on it.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cBecause JD Vance went over there\u2026?\u201d Raw Story pressed. <\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I know,\u201d Marshall said before deflecting. \u201cI’m locked in on things I can impact and things I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orb\u00e1n left a permanent impression on some of the last remaining moderates in Washington, including Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), when the Hungarian strongman snubbed the senior U.S. senator and other American policymakers on a taxpayer-funded CODEL \u2014 or official Congressional Delegation fact-finding trip. <\/p>\n

\u201cWas it on my radar? Yes,\u201d Collins told Raw Story. \u201cBecause, I guess it was last year or the year before, a CODEL on which I was a participant, went to Hungary, and he refused to meet with us.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOh, really?\u201d Raw Story replied. \u201cI bet that stings to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut much more important than that, he was an autocratic anti-democratic authoritarian,\u201d Collins, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said. \u201cI\u2019m delighted that he was defeated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you disappointed that Vance went over there and campaigned for him?\u201d Raw Story pressed. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was surprised,\u201d Collins, who also chairs the powerful Senate Appropriations \u2014 or spending \u2014 Committee, told Raw Story as her aide hustled her away. <\/p>\n

On the other side of the aisle, Democrats were more disgusted than surprised to see the vice president of the United States campaign abroad. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s ridiculous that any sitting vice president is actively engaged in the election of any country,\u201d Warnock said. \u201cBut in this case, the sitting vice president of the United States, literally, campaigning for Viktor Orb\u00e1n, calling him \u2018Europe’s only statesman\u2019 \u2014 he’s a strongman. He’s an authoritarian.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, other Democrats can\u2019t help but smirk at Vance\u2019s faux pas on the international stage. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems to have backfired,\u201d Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) told Raw Story. \u201cSo, you know, maybe it’ll have some bearing on whether Republican candidates here want him campaigning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCozying up to Putin is not a winning political strategy\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

While Democrats are focused on winning November\u2019s midterm elections, many say they\u2019re encouraged that the global march of the alt-right was dealt a major blow. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an amazing outcome,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cI mean, it shows that no matter how badly broken a democracy seems, the people, you know, are still in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy says there may be another takeaway that officials in the Trump White House should note. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows cozying up to Putin is not a winning political strategy in Europe or the United States,\u201d Murphy told Raw Story. <\/p>\n
