Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the state\u2019s GOP Senate nominee, had spent years as the state\u2019s top law enforcement officer \u201cwaging war on Democratic and Latino-led groups\u201d amid his amplification of false claims of widespread voter fraud, but in doing so, may have created a powerful obstacle in his bid for higher office, The New York Times reported<\/u> Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stakes of the fight with groups determined to mobilize Texas\u2019 fast-growing Hispanic electorate changed significantly last month when [Paxton] won the Republican Party\u2019s nomination for Senate,\u201d the Times\u2019 report reads. \u201cNow it is personal and could help determine his own political future \u2013 and which party controls the Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paxton regularly targeted progressive Hispanic groups in Texas under a state law<\/u> passed in 2021 designed to strengthen \u201celection integrity.\u201d The law criminalized \u201cwhat had been fairly routine tools for civic groups,\u201d and \u201cparticularly in Latino communities,\u201d the Times wrote, resulting in \u201ca trail of ransacked residences, shellshocked volunteers, struggling organizations and indictments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result of the law was a dramatic reduction in voter outreach efforts among Hispanic communities. Jolt Initiative<\/u>, for instance, the \u201clargest youth outreach group in Texas,\u201d typically registered more than 12,000 voters a year, but in 2025, only registered 3,586 voters.<\/p>\n

Paxton’s office did not return the Times’ request for comment, but Texas Hispanic voters and advocates were eager to make clear exactly what they believe is at stake in his Senate bid.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t look good for us, but we are going to keep fighting,\u201d said Gabriel Rosales, who heads the League of United Latin American Citizens in Texas as its director, speaking with the Times.<\/p>\n
