President Donald Trump vowed<\/u> back in January that his administration\u2019s takeover of Venezuela would \u201cbenefit\u201d Americans, and yet, just over six months later, that promise appears to be imploding after key players have reportedly gotten cold feet, The Washington Post reported<\/u> Sunday.<\/p>\n

In the immediate aftermath of the unprecedented U.S. attack on Venezuela earlier this year, the Trump administration took control<\/u> of the nation\u2019s oil revenue, which Trump claimed at the time would be \u201cused to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.\u201d The Trump administration had hoped U.S. companies would invest $100 billion<\/u> into the South American nation\u2019s energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut businesses don\u2019t want to spend big on capital-intensive projects to extract heavy crude, which take decades to pay off, if there\u2019s a high chance the government will backslide,\u201d the Post\u2019s report reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance said recently that Venezuela has \u2018a lot more work to do on their side of the equation.\u2019 He said the overhaul of the hydrocarbon law was insufficient \u2018to attract a whole lot of investment\u2019 because it could amount to a \u201895 percent government take.\u2019 Chevron CEO Mike Wirth has expressed similar sentiments<\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration was recently in hot water over its handling of Venezuela\u2019s oil revenue. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) pressed Secretary of State Marco Rubio last week during a congressional hearing on whether the administration was concealing lucrative private contracts related to Venezuela\u2019s oil.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Venezuelan government\u2019s illegitimacy raises the risk of investing capital,\u201d the Post\u2019s report reads. \u201cOnce real elections are held, U.S. companies will gain a clearer sense of whether it\u2019s worth pouring in money.\u201d<\/p>\n
