Controversial candidate Graham Platner won the Democratic nomination in Maine’s Senate race, but a new analysis found the party doesn’t even need him to win to take back control of the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n

The Iraq war veteran won his primary race and will face off against Republican Sen. Susan Collins despite allegations of mistreatment by past girlfriends, sexually explicit text messages sent to other women while he was married, questionable comments posted online and getting a tattoo of a Nazi symbol \u2013 but CNN’s Harry Enten said his campaign is not essential for Democrats. <\/p>\n

“So that that is<\/span> the mathematical equation,<\/span> right?” Enten said. “They need a net one, two,<\/span> three, four seats. That is what<\/span> they need to net, and I think<\/span> that there is this idea out<\/span> there that if Graham Platner<\/span> doesn’t win in Maine, then it<\/span> screws the Democrats. That is<\/span> not true at all. Yes, it may<\/span> make it more difficult, but they<\/span> have a real path, even without<\/span> winning in Maine.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Why don’t<\/span> we just take a look at some <\/span>polling in some key states,<\/span> right, some state polling in GOP-<\/span>held seats,” Enten continued. “These are states<\/span> that Donald Trump won by double<\/span> digits, but look at this: The<\/span> Democrats and the average polls<\/span> are actually slightly ahead.<\/span> Sherrod Brown in ohio, he’s up<\/span> by three points. He’s, of<\/span> course, the former senator lost<\/span> the seat back in 2024. How about<\/span> in Texas, which has not elected<\/span> a Democrat to the United States<\/span> senate since 1988? What do we<\/span> see here? We see James Talarico,<\/span> again, a small lead well within<\/span> the margin of error. But the<\/span> average poll, he’s up three<\/span> points.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“So in two states we have<\/span> polling out in the last few<\/span> weeks, last few months, when you<\/span> average it all together, where<\/span> you actually have Democrats<\/span> ahead again within the margin of<\/span> error, but up by three points in<\/span> two states that Donald Trump won<\/span> by double digits just two years<\/span> ago,” he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Platner winning in Maine would obviously help Democrats regain the Senate majority, Enten said, but he said President Donald Trump’s unpopularity gave them other paths to victory.<\/p>\n

“If we wind out the<\/span> map, right, a puncher’s chance,<\/span> at least a 20 percent chance that the<\/span> Kalshi Prediction Markets, people<\/span> putting their money where their<\/span> mouth is, in terms of Democrats<\/span> winning at least a 20 percent chance, l<\/span>ook at this,” Enten said. “There are seven GOP-<\/span>held seats, so the map is<\/span> actually really wide this year.<\/span> It has widened out, which is not<\/span> a big surprise when the<\/span> president of the United States<\/span> has an approval rating, if he’s<\/span> lucky, averaging about 40 percent. If<\/span> you look at most of the polls,<\/span> it’s under 40 percent. Bottom line is, the<\/span> map is wide. Democrats have a<\/span> path without Maine. Yes, Maine<\/span> helps them, but they have a<\/span> clear path without it.”<\/span><\/p>\n
