This fall’s midterm election is a referendum on President Donald Trump, according to a veteran journalist, and he’s not making things easy for Republicans trying to hold onto their congressional majorities.<\/p>\n

Polling has made clear that affordability remains the top voter concern, and Punchbowl News co-founder John Bresnahan told “CNN News Central” that Republicans on Capitol Hill, whom he’s covered for decades, were aghast when Trump declared “I love inflation” during an Oval Office event.<\/p>\n

“Oh yeah, Trump is the issue<\/span> of the election,” Bresnahan said. “I mean, he is<\/span> the biggest issue. His conduct,<\/span> the war, his handling the economy,<\/span> his conduct in office. I’ve got<\/span> to tell you, I was on the Hill<\/span> yesterday when he made those<\/span> comments and they went through<\/span> the Capitol pretty quickly, and<\/span> it was just, you know, every<\/span> Republican just winced. T<\/span>hey’re upset.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump was re-elected to a second term on a promise to fix the economy on Day One, but a year and a half later, voters have soured on his handling of the affordability crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The messaging they’re hearing<\/span> out of the White House is not<\/span> about inflation,” the well-connected reporter said. “It’s not about<\/span> the economy. It’s not about<\/span> Americans’ financial status, the<\/span>ir overdue credit card<\/span> payments. They’re struggling to<\/span> pay for school, and every day<\/span> that Trump is out talking about<\/span> Iran, he’s talking talking<\/span> about other issues, he’s<\/span> talking about the 2020 elections<\/span> is a disaster for Hill<\/span> Republicans. They’re just \u2013 it’s<\/span> a big problem for them.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Speaker<\/span> Mike Johnson can talk, you know,<\/span> say Trump’s labors are focused<\/span> on inflation, but the American<\/span> public doesn’t think so, <\/span>Congress doesn’t think so \u2013 even<\/span> the Republicans in Congress,<\/span> I’ll tell you that,” Bresnhan added. “So this is<\/span> a big problem for them.”<\/span><\/p>\n
