President Donald Trump’s economic polling looks so bad that CNN’s Harry Enten wondered whether he was engaged in self-sabotage.<\/p>\n

The president blurted out “I love the inflation” when asked about the last month’s 4.2 percent spike in costs, and the data analyst said that certainly won’t help Trump or his Republican allies on the most pressing issue for American voters.<\/p>\n

“I would just say, if I’m an<\/span> American, based upon the polling<\/span> I’m seeing, I hear the<\/span> president, go, ‘What the heck did<\/span> I just hear? What the heck is<\/span> going on?'” Enten said. “One of the most<\/span> politically tone-deaf statements<\/span> I’ve ever heard, and you can<\/span> see it in the numbers right<\/span> here. Americans don’t think<\/span> don’t like the inflation, they<\/span> hate the inflation. They don’t<\/span> love the inflation, they hate<\/span> the inflation.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump is 50 points underwater on the issue of inflation in at least eight polls \u2014 a historic first, Enten said. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Every<\/span> other president and every other<\/span> year, the answer is zero,” he said. “Trump<\/span> is not only the first one to<\/span> reach minus-50 points or worse, net<\/span> approval rating on inflation.<\/span> He’s done it many times, so<\/span> when I hear Trump’s statement, I<\/span> just, I feel like [the character] Mrs. White in [the 1985 film] ‘Clue’ and<\/span> going, what what is what is<\/span> happening here?”<\/span><\/p>\n

The president’s approval rating on gas prices, which have exploded since he launched a war on Iran, is even more gruesome.<\/p>\n

“How about<\/span> an 80 percent disapproval on gas<\/span> prices?” Enten said. “Which of course is <\/span>fueling this frustration with<\/span> inflation. Take a look here, the<\/span> only president with an 80 percent<\/span> disapproval rating on gas prices<\/span> of all time is Trump in 2026.<\/span> You can see Trump there, he’s<\/span> pointing the arrow to it. Yes,<\/span> he has done it, this Iran war<\/span> has done it. It has fueled<\/span> record frustration, inflation<\/span> and record frustration when it<\/span> comes to gas prices. The only<\/span> president ever with at least an<\/span> 80 percent disapproval rating on gas<\/span> prices, Donald John Trump in<\/span> this year, 2026.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump’s inflation comments quickly spread among Republicans on Capitol Hill, and Enten said the remarks won’t be helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Republicans on Capitol<\/span> Hill absolutely hated Donald<\/span> Trump’s statement,” he said. “Why? Because<\/span> just it is absolutely funneling<\/span> down, okay. Democrats are more,<\/span> are the party more trusted on<\/span> inflation, for the first time<\/span> since the 1970s. It is true. Now<\/span> today we are actually seeing<\/span> polling in which the Democrats<\/span> are the party that is more trust<\/span> than inflation. I was looking<\/span> back at all the polls. I can<\/span> find the last time it really<\/span> happened in an average of polls<\/span> was in 1978. Of course, before<\/span> that, inflation, boom, took Jimmy<\/span> Carter out, and if history is<\/span> prologue in this situation, well,<\/span> it’s going to take out the<\/span> Republican majority in the House,<\/span> as well.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“So no wonder that<\/span> Republicans heard that statement<\/span> and, just like me, are like Mrs.<\/span> White. What, what what what did<\/span> I just hear? Well, you just<\/span> heard a president who wants to<\/span> sink his party’s midterm<\/span> fortunes. That’s what you just<\/span> heard”<\/span><\/p>\n
