President Donald Trump has been on a tear knocking out lawmakers in primaries for perceived disloyalty, most recently taking down Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY). But that is not necessarily going to serve his party well, MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace argued on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

In fact, she said, it may only be causing his party to circle the drain faster in the midterms.<\/p>\n

To explain, she quoted a recent observation from political strategist Dan Pfeiffer: “Yes, the<\/span> incumbent president can<\/span> influence primaries inside his<\/span> own party. And yes, Trump is<\/span> getting rid of people he<\/span> believes wronged him. But<\/span> spending nearly $20 million to<\/span> defeat a Republican in a<\/span> district Donald Trump won by 35<\/span> points, is not the flex people<\/span> think it is. At best, this is a<\/span> Pyrrhic victory, and Trump’s<\/span> revenge tour is a big problem<\/span> for the GOP moving forward.<\/span> Trump is a massive<\/span> drag on his party, and to win,<\/span> many Republicans will need to<\/span> show some independence from the<\/span> deeply unpopular president.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the quote continued, “The<\/span> smarter, savvier, less<\/span> megalomaniacal leader would<\/span> give his party the room to do<\/span> what they need to do to win.<\/span> Trump is incapable of doing so,<\/span> and the GOP will pay a price<\/span> for it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The other problem, Wallace noted, is that Trump is now creating a contingent of lame-duck Republicans with nothing left to lose in opposing him \u2014 and they are now doing just that, with Cassidy leading the way. He “j<\/span>oined Democrats<\/span> to become the 50th yes vote on<\/span> a war powers resolution,<\/span> opposed Trump’s ballroom<\/span> funding and reconciliation, and<\/span> called Texas AG Ken Paxton,<\/span> Trump’s freshly-endorsed<\/span> challenger for John Cornyn’s<\/span> Senate seat, a, quote, ‘felon.'”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>This defiance, she continued, is “likely just the beginning” because it’s not just Cassidy and Massie opposing Trump now \u2014 lawmakers rejected Trump’s order to include a harsh voter suppression bill into bipartisan housing reform legislation, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) flatly refused Trump’s demand to fire the Senate parliamentarian for ruling his ballroom funding out of order.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Even<\/span> administration ally Senator<\/span> John Kennedy, expressed doubt<\/span> about DOJ’s $1.8 billion Anti<\/span>-Weaponization Fund,” Wallace added. “Now Cornyn<\/span> could join their ranks.”<\/span><\/p>\n
