The idea to suspend that right \u2013 at least, for undocumented migrants \u2013 came from White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, as was detailed in the <u>forthcoming book<\/u> viewed by the Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it came to suspending habeas corpus, one of the most powerful constitutional protections of individual rights, Mr. Miller was in effect encouraging something Mr. Trump had long dreamed of: bypassing judges in deportation cases,\u201d the Times\u2019 report reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president was interested. He asked advisers about Abraham Lincoln\u2019s <u>suspension<\/u> of habeas rights during the Civil War. Mr. Miller directed the Justice Department to study the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the discussions turned \u201cserious,\u201d the Times reported, White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf penned a memo for White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles with the subject line: \u201cThe Writ of Habeas Corpus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/propertyrelocationusa.com\/?p=2106\">Texas political beef gets oddly specific: \u2018We don\u2019t eat with a napkin\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDated April 29, 2025, and stamped \u2018confidential,\u2019 the memo was careful and lawyerly but amounted to a warning against end-running the rule of law,\u201d The Times wrote, describing the \u201csecret\u201d memo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA senior administration official, speaking on background because the official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said for this article that \u2018senior staff\u2019 had requested the memos, and that they were seen by relatively few people,\u201d The Times\u2019 report reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the documents reflected alarm among a small group of senior aides.
