Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, responded to his Republican opponent\u2019s \u201cbarbecue debate<\/u>\u201d challenge issued on Monday with a challenge of his own, one that put the Trump-backed candidate\u2019s controversial record in the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton challenged Talarico Monday to a debate to be held at a barbecue restaurant, a debate designed to verify whether Talarico actually enjoys barbecued meat as he\u2019s claimed. The unorthodox challenge comes as Republicans take continued potshots at Talarico’s masculinity.<\/p>\n

Talarico\u2019s response was far less lighthearted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll meet Paxton at any time and any place if he will answer Texans\u2019 questions about why he let admitted child sex offender Adam Hoffman walk free,\u201d Talarico said, according to Texas Tribune reporter Alejandro Serrano<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Talarico was referencing the controversial plea deal<\/u> Paxton\u2019s office offered Hoffman, a former Texas attorney who was originally facing life in prison<\/u> for \u201csexually abusing a young boy\u201d over a three-year period, a plea deal that would see him instead plead guilty to \u201ctwo misdemeanors and serve a total of just one day in jail,\u201d the Texas Tribune previously reported<\/u>.<\/p>\n

The plea deal was so controversial that Republican Texas state Rep. Jeff Leach, who\u2019s endorsed by Trump, suggested<\/u> Texas voters abandon Paxton in the upcoming general election.<\/p>\n

Despite the plea deal offered by Paxton\u2019s office, Hoffman was ultimately sentenced<\/u> to 60 days in jail, but has since been released. He also won\u2019t be required to register as a sex offender.<\/p>\n

\u201cA real and dangerous predator \u2013 a present threat to Texas children \u2013 as free as you and me,\u201d Leach said the day before Hoffman\u2019s release in a statement<\/u> published on social media. \u201cA slap on his wrist and a spit in the face to his victim. Why?! How?! Because that\u2019s the deal he made with Ken Paxton. Vote accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n
