CNN’s Harry Enten was surprised by the polling data for Vice President JD Vance, who’s considered a frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old vice president has taken an active role in defending the nebulous agreement to end the war in Iran and has been promoting his forthcoming memoir, “Communion,” and the network’s chief data analyst told “CNN News Central” that prediction markets had soured on his chances.<\/p>\n

“Become the<\/span> Republican nominee, they have<\/span> been tumbling, they have been<\/span> falling down,” Enten said. “What are we<\/span> talking about? A real closing<\/span> here since the beginning of the<\/span> year. Chance to be the 2028 GOP<\/span> nominee, you know, you go back a<\/span> few months ago. Look at this, <\/span>clear favorite, 50 percent chance, Marco<\/span> Rubio way back there at 11 [percent]. But<\/span> look at this, the gap is<\/span> closing, it is closing. Yes,<\/span> Vance is still the nominal<\/span> favorite. But Marco Rubio right<\/span> behind him at 28 percent.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“So, you know,<\/span> what happened during that<\/span> period?” Enten added. “Obviously, the Iran war<\/span> happened during that period, and<\/span> that made JD Vance’s chances<\/span> tumble and has made Marco<\/span> Rubio’s chances go right up \u2013 i<\/span>t’s neck and neck.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vance enjoyed am 81-75 approval rating lead among Republicans over Rubio in January, but the secretary of state now holds a 77-69 advantage among GOP voters, and Enten dug deeper into the vice president’s popularity.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You know what<\/span> I always say, you go to a home<\/span> state, the people who know you<\/span> best,” Enten said. “That to me oftentimes<\/span> gives you an idea of their<\/span> political future, and on this<\/span> one, take a look here. Now, this<\/span> is the general electorate. But<\/span> Vance’s net favorability rating<\/span> in Ohio, you know, you go back<\/span> to the 2024 election, he was at<\/span> plus-five points. Even in Ohio,<\/span> in JD Vance’s home state,<\/span> among the electorate overall,<\/span> he is underwater among<\/span> independents. Look at this, h<\/span>e’s 27 points underwater. JD V<\/span>ance, not so popular in the<\/span> Buckeye State.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In his new book, Vance walks back his smear against “childless cat ladies” in the Democratic Party, but Enten found the damage has already been done.<\/span><\/p>\n

“How is he doing among<\/span> women, among men?” Enten said. “Well, he’s<\/span> underwater with both of them.<\/span> Among men, he’s slightly<\/span> underwater at minus-two points.<\/span> Of course, if you’re a<\/span> Republican, you need to be<\/span> popular with men if you’re going<\/span> to win a national election. Among<\/span> women, he is way underwater, h<\/span>e’s 26 points underwater, and<\/span> the gender gap in the Quinnipiac<\/span> University poll, when you match<\/span> them up against other<\/span> Republicans in the Trump<\/span> cabinet, the highest, the<\/span> largest gender gap, it actually<\/span> belonged to JD Vance.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“He<\/span> doesn’t need to win women if<\/span> he’s going to win in 2028,” Enten added, “but<\/span> he can’t be this unpopular <\/span>among them.”<\/span><\/p>\n
