CNN’s Harry Enten presented fresh polling data measuring public opinion on President Donald Trump’s war in Iran.<\/p>\n

The 80-year-old president signed a memorandum of understanding Wednesday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic and pause fighting for 60 days while negotiating the terms of a final deal on nuclear weapons, and Enten said Americans will likely wonder why he launched the war in the first place.<\/p>\n

“Yeah, I think the American<\/span> people are going, what was the<\/span> point of all of that?” Enten said. “What was<\/span> the point of all that? Because<\/span> the American people hate it, and<\/span> the way you can know that they<\/span> hate it, just take a look. <\/span>Trump’s net approval ratings<\/span> hit lows for Fox News and Fox<\/span> polls. In May, he had his <\/span>lowest-ever<\/span><\/span> rating at minus-22 points. You<\/span> come into the poll that was<\/span> released last night, the second-<\/span>lowest ever, one point better at<\/span> minus-21 points, way underwater, and<\/span> with independents.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“I know you<\/span> love when I point out the<\/span> independents \u2013 55<\/span> points underwater,” Enten added. “I mean, my<\/span> goodness gracious. This was a<\/span> political disaster. No wonder<\/span> the president wants to move on<\/span> from it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump admitted that he feared becoming Herbert Hoover and being saddled with a global depression, and Enten said those concerns were justified.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You mentioned<\/span> Herbert Hoover, the economy,<\/span> right?” he said. “That sunk his presidency, i<\/span>nflation is what is sinking<\/span> Donald Trump’s presidency to all-<\/span>time lows, at least according to<\/span> Fox, because just take a look<\/span> here, look at Ipsos polling.<\/span> Trump’s approval rating on<\/span> inflation pre-war \u2013 it was bad,<\/span> right? It was 33 points<\/span> underwater. But then look in the<\/span> past month, the average,<\/span> according to the Ipsos polling, l<\/span>ook at that \u2013 51 points<\/span> underwater. There was no<\/span> president ever before that had<\/span> any poll in which he was 50<\/span> points underwater on inflation<\/span> or worse, and the average of the<\/span> Ipsos polling over the last<\/span> month was 51 points underwater<\/span> on inflation. The Iran war<\/span> absolutely drove Trump to new<\/span> lows on the issue that got him<\/span> re-elected in the first place, i<\/span>nflation.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Enten looked at past presidents to get a sense of where public opinion would stand now that the Iran war appears to be over.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Just take a<\/span> look at this, [Joe] Biden, right, the<\/span> Afghanistan withdrawal days,” Enten said.<\/span> “Biden had a negative net<\/span> approval rating post-A<\/span>fghanistan, Afghanistan<\/span> withdrawal, all of them. His<\/span> presidency was simply put, sunk<\/span> by it. Now, I’m not saying<\/span> that’s necessarily what’s going<\/span> to happen with Donald Trump, but<\/span> it is an ominous potential<\/span> signal for him when, in fact, you<\/span> have getting out of a situation<\/span> the American people don’t like.”<\/span><\/p>\n
