Former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard may have been \u201cguided\u201d throughout her more than 24 years in politics by Chris Butler<\/u>, the leader of a group countless ex-members have described as a \u201ccult,\u201d an extensive report<\/u> from The Washington Post revealed Sunday.<\/p>\n

Gabbard began her career in politics as a Hawaii state House representative in 2002, climbing the ranks over decades before being appointed as Director of National Intelligence last year, a position she resigned from last Friday citing her husband\u2019s deteriorating health. <\/p>\n

However, after obtaining \u201chundreds of confidential memos,\u201d the Post revealed that much of her decision making over the past two decades \u2013 from what she should say to what bills she should introduce \u2013 may have been \u201cguided\u201d by Butler, who founded the Science of Identity Foundation<\/u>, a new religious movement that began in the 1970s, which some scholars<\/u> have called a \u201ccult.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFormer devotees had been telling me for weeks that Butler controlled his followers\u2019 major life decisions and demanded total obedience and secrecy,\u201d the Post\u2019s Jon Swaine wrote. \u201cThey said he spent years working to extend his reach into politics \u2013 and they suspected Gabbard\u2019s rise in Washington was the culmination of that effort.<\/p>\n

The memos, Swaine revealed, included specific guidance and direction on a number of different topics.<\/p>\n

\u201cDozens of attached memos appeared to document directives and advice for Gabbard from her time in Congress,\u201d Swaine wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome contained instructions on what legislation she should propose, which policies she should embrace and how she should conduct herself on television. They had an air of authority. A memo about a proposal to partition war-torn Iraq into three states quoted an unnamed person as saying it was \u2018time for TG to come up with this idea.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Other memos obtained by Swaine included \u201charshly critical\u201d language, he wrote, flagging from January of 2015 that contained a \u201cderisive assessment\u201d of Gabbard\u2019s response to an annual address delivered by former President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the first place, nobody gives a s— what you think about his State of the Union speech, unless you\u2019re going to say something of interest,\u201d the memo read. \u201cYou\u2019re not even trying. You\u2019ve become really intellectually lazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swaine continued, \u201cIn another, Gabbard was described as \u2018chickens—\u2019 and \u201cmealymouthed\u201d for her comments on a policy proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n
