Last Saturday, the White House shared<\/u> the iconic \u201cSaying Grace<\/u>\u201d painting by famed artist Norman Rockwell in a social media post, edited to include the caption \u201cWORTH PROTECTING,\u201d but on Monday, Rockwell\u2019s own granddaughter fired off at the Trump administration for \u201ccompletely\u201d misunderstanding the painting\u2019s meaning.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurtis Publishing holds the rights to that painting but I am willing to bet they didn\u2019t request them since they never follow copyright law,\u201d Daisy Rockwell told The Bulwark\u2019s Catherine Rampell. \u201cIt goes without saying that they have completely misunderstood the meaning of the painting, which is tolerance for others and peaceful coexistence.”<\/p>\n

Completed in 1951, \u201cSaying Grace\u201d depicts a woman and boy praying while at a restaurant. Above the edited painting as posted by the White House\u2019s official X account is the message \u201cThe values that shaped America,\u201d just the latest example of what former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan has called<\/u> the Trump administration\u2019s leanings \u201cinto fascist aesthetics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rockwell’s work has previously drawn controversy among conservatives, with some Tennessee parents in 2021 objecting<\/u> to school books featuring his depictions of desegregation because the images purportedly made white students “feel discomfort.”<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has frequently used Rockwell\u2019s art in its social media posts, and Rockwell\u2019s family argued<\/u> that the iconic painter would \u201cbe devastated\u201d if he were alive to \u201csee that his own work has been marshalled for the cause of persecution toward immigrant communities and people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n
