A prominent Republican House member was left “scared” after getting a first look at a new technology during a recent \u201cclosed-door demonstration,\u201d Punchbowl News reported Friday \u2014 technology that the lawmaker warned most of their colleagues failed to comprehend the ramifications of.<\/p>\n

That technology was Claude Mythos, the latest large language model developed by Anthropic using generative artificial intelligence, the capabilities of which were so great that the Trump administration suspended its use<\/u> by foreign nationals, effectively blocking its public release for the immediate future.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Anthropic] told the model to find a vulnerability in a bank and empty accounts, and then it went and did it,\u201d said Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, speaking with Punchbowl News. \u201c[Mythos] then could find this vulnerability and fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond the Mythos\u2019 apparent ability to drain bank accounts, Anthropic also demonstrated far more nefarious uses for its latest technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne unspecified model showed a detailed plan on how to kidnap a lawmaker in 30 seconds,\u201d Punchbowl News\u2019 report reads, paraphrasing Garbarino\u2019s remarks. \u201cBad actors could hack the models and use them to attack critical infrastructure, [Garbarino] said, noting that AI\u2019s agentic capabilities would allow models to take action without human prompting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Citing specific examples he feared could be employed by those with access to Mythos, Garbarino warned that individuals could \u201cturn off this gas pipeline\u201d or \u201cincrease the amount of chlorine\u201d in a community\u2019s water supply, and all from an individual\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have the ability to not just learn how to do it, but to tell it to do it for you,\u201d Garbarino told Punchbowl News. \u201cI\u2019d say 95% of my colleagues don\u2019t understand what the hell\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the Trump administration has, in effect, blocked Mythos\u2019 public release for the immediate future, President Donald Trump has handicapped states\u2019 ability to regulate the emerging AI technology with an executive order<\/u> he signed last December that blocks states from creating their own laws to regulate the technology.<\/p>\n
