A Washington, D.C. resident who protested President Donald Trump\u2019s surge of National Guard troops in the nation\u2019s capital was awarded a \u201csignificant\u201d settlement after being placed in handcuffs last year for following troops while playing \u201cStar Wars\u201d music.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pleased that the D.C. police recognize their part in violating my rights,\u201d said Sam O\u2019Hara, speaking with The Washington Post<\/u> Friday after having just reached \u201ca financial agreement with the D.C. government and four of its officers.\u201d \u201cI will say that I\u2019m pleased and [the settlement] was significant and meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last fall, O\u2019Hara followed a group of National Guard troops in D.C. while playing the “Imperial March,\u201d a menacing orchestrated piece typically associated with the iconic \u201cDarth Vader\u201d villain from the \u201cStar Wars\u201d franchise. Despite having pulled similar acts of protest in the past, one National Guard soldier in particular wasn\u2019t pleased with O\u2019Hara\u2019s form of protest, and ended up contacting D.C. police.<\/p>\n

With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, O\u2019Hara successfully sued the D.C. government over what he called his wrongful detention, though the specifics of the settlement were not disclosed by either party.<\/p>\n

Working in the hospitality industry, O\u2019Hara told the Post that the surge of National Guard troops in D.C. was a genuine strain on his line of work.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving the National Guard standing out in front of your beautiful restaurant is not really attractive for people coming into the restaurant,\u201d he told the Post.<\/p>\n

As for his unique form of protest, O\u2019Hara said he continues it to this day, \u201coften using a portable JBL speaker,\u201d the Post reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just the idea that at any point someone can stop me from practicing my right to protest,\u201d O\u2019Hara said.<\/p>\n
