A judge has slapped down President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to dodge the $5.8 million payment a New York court ruled is owed to writer E. Jean Carroll, court records show.<\/p>\n

New York federal court judge Lewis Kaplan on Saturday denied Trump’s motion to stall in Carroll’s sex abuse case and ordered the cash to be paid on Tuesday, according to court records and Lawfare senior editor Roger Parloff.<\/p>\n

Trump argued on Friday that he needed more time so his new attorney could get caught up on the case. But Carroll’s attorney Robbie Kaplan called the excuse just that; an excuse.<\/p>\n

“Defendant\u2019s assertion that he cannot respond to Plaintiff\u2019s Motion on the timeline ordered by the Court appears to be little more than yet another play for time,” wrote Robbie Kaplan.<\/p>\n

“We can only assume that Defendant is seeking, through the instant motion, to buy time so he can try to concoct some new basis to put off paying Plaintiff.”<\/p>\n

Parloff, who shared the filings online Saturday, identified Trump’s new attorney as Josh Halpern and argued Trump’s motion contained a fatal flaw. <\/p>\n

“Trump\u2019s known for 5 [months] that his lede [attorney] was leaving,” wrote Parloff on X. “[He] has co-counsel who\u2019s been on case since day one.”<\/p>\n

Apparently the New York City federal court judge agreed. <\/p>\n

These motions arrived days after the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s appeal of the case.<\/p>\n

Trump was found liable in 2023 for sexually abusing Carroll in a New York department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. A jury also found Trump defamed Carroll when he denied it. The verdict carried $5 million in damages.<\/p>\n
