Critics were left dumbstruck on Friday after President Donald Trump characterized a taxpayer-funded settlement he reached as an act of selflessness, a remark that some noted had also severely undercut his own past remarks.<\/p>\n

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump complained<\/u> Friday morning that he \u201cgave up a lot of money\u201d after agreeing to drop his $10 billion lawsuit<\/u> against the Internal Revenue Service in exchange for a nearly $1.8 billion settlement, with the funds earmarked for payouts to those who allege to have been unfairly targeted by the Biden administration\u2019s Justice Department.<\/p>\n

Trump said that in lieu of a personal payout that could have been an \u201cabsolute fortune,\u201d he instead opted to \u201chelp others\u201d who were \u201cbadly abused by an evil, corrupt and weaponized Biden administration.\u201d His remarks also come after he previously claimed<\/u> to not be \u201cinvolved\u201d in the creation of the fund.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s framing of securing a nearly $1.8 billion payout from taxpayers to potentially secure payments<\/u> for the president\u2019s donors or violent Jan. 6 Capitol rioters, critics argued, was stunning.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot content to just rip us all off, he expects praise for it,\u201d noted author Jennifer Erin Valent<\/u> in a social media post on X.<\/p>\n

Others, like podcast host \u201cHal for NY,\u201d whose videos on YouTube<\/u> have amassed more than 71 million views, pointed to what appeared to be a glaring contradiction Trump made in his remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunny, because he told us he had nothing to do with it. Now he wants a thank you?\u201d they wrote in a social media post on X to their nearly 18,000 followers.<\/p>\n

And Joanne Carducci, a prominent Democratic political commentator, wrote to her more than 1 million followers on X: \u201cI thought he said he had nothing to do with the slush fund?\u201d<\/p>\n
