CNN’s Harry Enten analyzed the range of outcomes likely in November’s midterm elections, and he found that massive gain were within reach for the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n

The political landscape was convulsed by the mid-decade redistricting war kicked off by President Donald Trump in Texas, and last month’s Supreme Court ruling on Louisiana’s congressional map set off another mad dash of partisan gerrymandering, so Enten tried to determine the possible outcomes based on this new reality.<\/p>\n

“I’m<\/span> going to put on my professor cap<\/span> here,” Enten said. “<\/span>I think that,<\/span> you know, sometimes we sort of<\/span> get lost, right, we focus in on<\/span> one poll and one narrative, and<\/span> sometimes there are competing<\/span> narratives, and I think it’s<\/span> worth just taking a step back<\/span> because I think some people are<\/span> like, well, the polls showed one<\/span> thing and another thing <\/span>happened.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Enten examined five polls showing Democrats with a lead in voters’ choice for Congress, but they led by 3 percent in one poll, 5 percent in two polls and 10 percent in two others.<\/span><\/p>\n

“There’s quite this bit of<\/span> variance that is going on right<\/span> here, and you know what?” Enten said. “This is<\/span> actually a good thing. This is a<\/span> normal thing, this is what<\/span> happens when you have margins of<\/span> error that are going out there.<\/span> You’d expect an average, but<\/span> then you have a range of<\/span> possible results around that<\/span> average, and we’re not<\/span> necessarily sure which one is<\/span> right if the election were held<\/span> today, and, of course, there’s<\/span> the extra variance of the fact<\/span> that the election is not being<\/span> held until November.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Enten drilled in further to try and predict how many seats Democrats could gain if those polling leads held firm.<\/span><\/p>\n

“What’s the<\/span> difference between, let’s say,<\/span> Democrats winning by 100 versus<\/span> winning by three, and this is<\/span> where it gets really<\/span> interesting,” he said. “Okay, so even if<\/span> you take redistricting into<\/span> account, given a popular vote<\/span> win of, let’s say, three<\/span> points, what would that mean for<\/span> Democratic House gains? They<\/span> gain probably somewhere in<\/span> estimate is between zero and six<\/span> seats, which at the upper end of<\/span> that range would be enough to<\/span> take back the House. But on the<\/span> lower end of that range, that<\/span> would not be, that would be<\/span> Republicans holding on.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“But what<\/span> about that 10-point lead that<\/span> you see in Marist, the New York<\/span> Times?” Enten added. “Well, that would be a<\/span> ginormous blowout, and this is<\/span> just an estimate. It could be<\/span> higher, a little bit higher, a<\/span> little bit lower. But we’re<\/span> talking about an estimate of a<\/span> Democratic gain of between 20 to<\/span> 30 seats or more. They could be <\/span>ending up 245 seats or north of<\/span> there potentially, versus being<\/span> stuck, let’s say 213, 214,<\/span> 215 to 216, maybe barely<\/span> getting to a majority. So look,<\/span> when you see this range of<\/span> potential results, I want you to<\/span> keep in mind, yes, Democrats are<\/span> probably favored to take back<\/span> the House. It’s by no means a<\/span> guarantee, but they could end up<\/span> blowing the Republicans right<\/span> out of the water. All of that is<\/span> within the margin of error at<\/span> this point, especially given<\/span> that months from the e<\/span>lection.”<\/span><\/p>\n
