Lindsey Graham (R-SC) spent his final days aggressively pushing for the United States to impose stricter sanctions on Russia, President Donald Trump has instead said<\/u> passing a cryptocurrency bill would be the best way to \u201chonor\u201d Graham\u2019s legacy, making even a staunch Trump ally wince.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most obvious and logical way [to honor Graham] would be the sanctions bill, because it\u2019s his bill,\u201d said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) in an interview Monday, as reported<\/u> by Politico on Tuesday. \u201cYou\u2019re not making anything up. He practically died trying to get it passed\u2026 Anything else becomes kind of political trickery in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham died Saturday night of a brief and sudden illness, which preliminary findings<\/u> have since found was likely related to \u201caortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.\u201d And, while Graham was perhaps best known<\/u> for his advocacy for foreign interventionism, Trump concluded that passing a bill backed<\/u> by the cryptocurrency industry would be the best way to honor the South Carolina Republican.<\/p>\n

The suggestion, Politico reported, \u201cstruck a false note to many lawmakers,\u201d and also \u201cunderscored how quickly many in Washington are moving after the Republican senator\u2019s death to claim his mantle for their own purposes.\u201d Trump had already received scrutiny<\/u> for using Graham\u2019s death to promote his controversial voter ID bill known as the SAVE Act.<\/p>\n

When asked directly whether he agreed with Trump, Cramer stopped short of a direct rebuke, instead reaching for what appeared to be a veiled critique.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis place is full of circumstances where you get too cute by half,\u201d Cramer said, adding that honoring Graham with a bill to impose sanctions on Russia would be the \u201cobvious\u201d choice.<\/p>\n

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) concurred with Cramer\u2019s assessment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be a great tribute and legacy for Lindsey,\u201d Thune said on passing a Russia sanctions bill, according to Politico.<\/p>\n

Graham spent much of his career advocating for U.S. military intervention in countries abroad, including Iran<\/u>, Iraq<\/u>, Libya<\/u>, Mexico<\/u>, North Korea<\/u>, Syria<\/u> and Venezuela<\/u>, among other nations<\/u>. <\/p>\n
