Florida residents expressed outrage over the recent name change<\/u> to the Palm Beach International Airport \u2013 which last week was officially renamed as the \u201cPresident Donald J. Trump International Airport\u201d \u2013 as some vowed to \u201cnever\u201d return to the airport again, NOTUS learned<\/u> after filing a public records request.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am writing to assure you that as long as you are calling this airport anything closely related to \u2018TRUMP\u2019 I will NEVER FLY INTO THERE. NEVER!\u201d a woman identifying herself as \u201cJan\u201d wrote to the airport in protest. \u201cYou have 100% lost all my family\u2019s business. Despicable move!\u201d<\/p>\n

The name change was approved after Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law last March to rename the airport in Trump\u2019s honor, the first such instance of an airport being named after a sitting president. The airport\u2019s rebranding is expected to cost taxpayers around $5.5 million<\/u>, though the airport\u2019s officials have \u201ctried to placate frequent flyers,\u201d NOTUS reported, by issuing a sympathetic statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we recognize that the required name change may be received in different ways by our passengers, we\u2019re grateful for your continued support through this transition period,\u201d reads an excerpt from the airport\u2019s FAQ section<\/u> on its website.<\/p>\n

The statement did little to quell outrage, as was revealed in the countless letters the airport received that were later obtained by NOTUS.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully you\u2019ll have plenty of airbags to catch the barfs from people as they drive up,\u201d one letter reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s truly entertaining that you had to add a disclaimer to this form explaining the renaming of your airport after our racist, xenophobic, misogynistic 47th president,\u201d reads another.<\/p>\n

One person who identified themselves as a business owner, according to NOTUS, vowed to \u201creroute\u201d their travelers \u201cto other airports around and within Florida\u201d in protest. Another, who described themselves as a \u201cCanadian visitor\u201d and frequent patron of the airport, proclaimed that they would \u201cnever step into it again despite the travel inconvenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least 24 letters made reference to Trump\u2019s past friendship with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including one that asked whether the airport offered \u201ccomplementary flights to Epstein\u2019s Island,\u201d referencing Epstein\u2019s island Little Saint James in the U.S. Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n
