California Gov. Gavin Newsom lashed out at the Trump administration Tuesday over what his press office called a \u201crecycled political stunt\u201d \u2013 one that saw the administration freeze more than $867 million<\/u> in federal funding earmarked for Medicaid recipients.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration announced<\/u> Tuesday that it would be freezing more than $1 billion in Medicaid funding earmarked for California and Minnesota, funding that would only be released, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy said<\/u>, once the two states \u201cprovide basic documentation showing that these services are legitimate and not fraudulent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Administrator Mehmet Oz said the Trump administration\u2019s approach was actually \u201cvery conservative,\u201d and that the administration could have, should they have selected to do so, \u201ctaken a lot more money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newsom\u2019s press office didn\u2019t mince words with its response.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s announcement from Dr. Oz is the same recycled political stunt we\u2019ve seen before. California isn\u2019t being targeted because Trump has evidence of fraud,\u201d reads a Tuesday social media post<\/u> on X from Newsom\u2019s press office. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are being targeted for political reasons \u2014 and because Dr. Oz doesn\u2019t understand that we are *SAVING* taxpayers money by keeping seniors and people with disabilities out of far more expensive nursing homes! We hate fraud. That\u2019s not what this is. And we stand ready to collaborate with CMS in good faith efforts to combat fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has increasingly resorted to withholding federal funds from states as a tool of coercion \u2013 or, as described by ex-Trump official Miles Taylor, \u201cextortion<\/u>.\u201d For example, a recent set of rule changes<\/u> enacted by the Trump administration mandated states adopt a \u201csweeping set of election changes\u201d or lose federal grants largely used to combat terrorism and disasters.<\/p>\n
