Foreign policy expert Trita Parsi issued a bleak warning Saturday over what he called a major \u201cstrategic mistake\u201d of the Trump administration that could very well \u201cbring the [Iran] war to the U.S.,\u201d and soon.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Saturday, CBS News reported<\/u> that the United States and Israel were actively planning \u201cone of the harshest bombing campaigns to date\u201d targeting Iran\u2019s energy infrastructure, citing multiple inside sources. Also on Saturday, federal authorities were investigating<\/u> whether Iran was responsible for a string of cyber attacks on U.S. water systems across several states.<\/p>\n

The cyber attacks, per The New York Times<\/u>, \u201cincreasingly appeared to be the work of Iran.\u201d As such, Parsi, a foreign policy analyst and president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, feared that the Trump administration\u2019s plans and the cyber attacks could be connected.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Iran is behind these cyberattacks on US water systems, the message is clear,\u201d Parsi wrote in a social media post Saturday on Substack.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s a warning: If the US strikes critical infrastructure in Iran, including desalination plants and power grids, Iran will respond in kind through cyberattacks against critical infrastructure in the US. Essentially, Iran will bring the war to the US itself using cyber.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump has repeatedly<\/u> threatened to destroy Iranian power plants and other critical infrastructure, threats that, if carried out, would likely be considered war crimes<\/u>. Should the United States and Israel carry out its supposed plan to launch a massive attack on Iranian energy infrastructure, Parsi warned that the consequences could be astronomical for Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strategic mistake of starting \u2013 and restarting \u2013 this war is only becoming more enormous,\u201d Parsi wrote.<\/p>\n
