President Donald Trump’s preferred congressional candidate has fallen 20 points behind a competitor who dropped out of the race, reports show. <\/p>\n

This GOP primary underperformance Tuesday night represents a \u201cstrong signal,\u201d some said, of how the midterm elections may pan out.<\/p>\n

Republican candidate and former law enforcement officer Amir Hassan secured Trump\u2019s endorsement<\/u> in June in his bid to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. While the race has yet to be called as of 6 a.m. ET, Hassan is projected to lose<\/u> after receiving around 33% of the vote. <\/p>\n

Hassan\u2019s GOP opponent, retired engineer Thomas Smith \u2013 who had previously dropped out of the race<\/u> \u2013 received more than 50%<\/u> of the vote as of Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

With Trump recently boasting <\/u>about his 2026 primary season endorsement record being 100%, the rejection of Hassan by GOP voters despite the president\u2019s backing, Semafor journalist David Weigel suggested, was a strong indicator of things to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is it, folks,\u201d Weigel wrote Wednesday in a social media post on X. \u201cWe\u2019re getting 1) a suspended campaign winning the nomination, 2) Trump\u2019s endorsed candidate losing, and 3) NYT not having a headshot<\/u> of the winner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weigel\u2019s assessment was echoed by Sam Kolins, a data scientist and online content creator<\/u>, who suggested Trump\u2019s influence on GOP voters had finally waned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this isn\u2019t a strong signal of what November might look like for Republicans, I don\u2019t know what is,\u201d Kolins wrote Wednesday in a social media post<\/u> on X. \u201cThis is the closest anyone will ever get to *literally* losing to Generic Democrat.\u201d<\/p>\n
