I know y\u2019all would probably rather not talk about the Republican candidates for governor of Florida.<\/p>\n

However, distasteful as it is, we must: The primary is Aug. 18.<\/p>\n

Now, this family-friendly publication frowns on scatological language, so let\u2019s just call the campaign unseemly.<\/p>\n

Undignified. Unedifying. Flat-out godawful.<\/p>\n

Rep. Byron Donalds is the frontrunner by a mile, maybe two miles, polling at least 40 points ahead of his nearest rival, who is either (depending on the poll) Lt. Gov. Jay Collins or James Fishback, who calls himself a \u201cbusinessman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lower down the food chain, you\u2019ve got a former speaker of the Florida House, a retired firefighter, an Auntie Anne\u2019s pretzel franchise operator, and a guy who used to be a computer repair shop owner with several arrests for domestic abuse and child neglect.<\/p>\n

There are others, but you\u2019ve never heard of them and you never will.<\/p>\n

Donalds has received the endorsement of the White House\u2019s current occupant, the electoral equivalent of Willy Wonka\u2019s Golden Ticket.<\/p>\n

The Trump stamp of approval counts for a lot.<\/p>\n

Look what it did for the unrepentant adulterer Ken Paxton in Texas. He was impeached by his own party, yet he beat incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.<\/p>\n

Some wild-eyed Democrats dare hope they might pull off a win this year: fresh-faced Presbyterian seminarian James Talarico is gaining in the polls.<\/p>\n

But y\u2019all: It\u2019s Texas. A Dem hasn\u2019t won there since the last Ice Age.<\/p>\n

Here in Florida, the Dems are less embarrassing but also less likely to win anything, so we\u2019ll talk about them another time.<\/p>\n

For now, let\u2019s concentrate on the GOP field.<\/p>\n

Donalds has a built-in advantage, but also a few problems.<\/p>\n

Spellcheck!<\/h2>\n

Remember the infamous Epstein \u201cBirthday Book,\u201d the one with the female torso and Donald Trump\u2019s signature on her (ahem) pubic area?<\/p>\n

Donalds leapt to Trump\u2019s defense, assuring the world there was NO WAY that was Trump\u2019s signature. He, Byron Donalds, had witnessed the man signing a gazillion things and that sig was just WRONG.<\/p>\n

Except it wasn\u2019t wrong.<\/p>\n

Donalds would do better to just shut up about this can of worms.<\/p>\n

He might also try hiring literate aides.<\/p>\n

Pushing an education program he calls \u201cRead to Succeed\u201d on Instagram, he appeared before a sign reading \u201cAchieveability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spellcheck, congressman, Spellcheck!<\/p>\n

One citizen wondered, \u201cIs his staff just stupid, or do they hate him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sad!<\/p>\n

Then there are his policy positions, which are, shall we say, flexible.<\/p>\n

He used to be all rah-rah about AI data centers, which his Big Uncool Friend Donald Trump calls \u201cmoney machines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thing is, Floridians don\u2019t like data centers. According to a recent poll, 68% of us say \u201cHell, no!\u201d to a data center anywhere near us.<\/p>\n

Donalds finally noticed. He now expresses \u201cconcerns,\u201d claiming he favors local governments\u2019 ability to regulate these habitat-wrecking, water-greedy, grid-busting monsters, and has filed a bill in Congress to force them to get water and electricity from private sources, or manufacture power and water themselves.<\/p>\n

(Not sure how people can manufacture water, but hey, Musk, Altman, et al. are supposed to be \u201cgeniuses,\u201d so maybe they\u2019ll figure it out).<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter, though. That bill will die on the vine.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Donalds has received hundreds of thousands in campaign cash from tech moguls and data center builders.<\/p>\n

Quiet part out loud <\/h2>\n

Rival candidate James Fishback, who also says he has reservations about AI farms, pounced on Donalds like a squirrel on a doughnut, claiming Donalds wants to build data centers on \u201cpristine land.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fishback\u2019s barely polling in double figures; he needs more attention.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s said Byron Donalds is a \u201cslave,\u201d and called him \u201cByrone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He suggested a black man be \u201clynched\u201d for asking him uncomfortable questions about alleged sex with an underage girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cAIPAC Shakur\u201d is another one of his pet names for Donalds.<\/p>\n

Fishback agrees with the unlovely and untalented white supremacist Nick Fuentes, who says, \u201cJews are running society. Women need to shut the [expletive] up. Blacks need to be imprisoned for the most part.\u201d<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t go into too much detail about Fishback\u2019s bizarre, somewhat troubling relationships with women (see underage above), but it\u2019s worth noting that on May 23 he married one Valeria Quimby.<\/p>\n

A mere couple of months ago, he presented a very different girlfriend to the public, one Francesca Raine, AKA \u201cCrypto Barbie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms. Raine is unimpressed with how her former squeeze is handling all this, accusing him of ditching her for some \u201crandom girl after political pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ah, young love.<\/p>\n

A little more seriously, as of last week it was unclear whether Fishback would even be allowed to run in the August primary.<\/p>\n

Seems in 2020, he lived and voted in Washington, D.C. Florida law says if you want to run for governor, you have to have been resident in the state for seven years.<\/p>\n

Oops.<\/p>\n

Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, jockeying with Fishback for second place, sued, pointing out Fishback was not, in fact, a Florida resident and should be booted off the ballot.<\/p>\n

Lucky for him, a Leon County judge let him stay, suggesting because Fishback says he lives in Florida, he lives in Florida: \u201cThis Court will not be deciding the race between the Lieutenant Governor and Mr. Fishback. That will be in the very sound hands of the voters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fishback crowed about his triumph over Collins\u2019 and Donalds\u2019 \u201clawfare\u201d attack on him.<\/p>\n

In response, Collins\u2019 lawyer sniffed, \u201cWho wants to vote for a candidate whose own sworn testimony is he committed mortgage fraud and doesn\u2019t understand how the law works when it comes to election integrity and paying state income taxes?\u201d<\/p>\n

Where\u2019s the DeSantis endorsement?<\/h2>\n

And what of Jay Collins himself? He\u2019s still on the ballot and, given Donalds\u2019 gaffe-prone campaign and Fishback\u2019s ick-factor, you would think he\u2019d be gaining more traction with Florida conservatives.<\/p>\n

Collins is a decorated ex-Green Beret, rabid abortion opponent, and author of a bill that would have banned Pride flags at government buildings but allowed the Confederate battle flag (the bill was later withdrawn).<\/p>\n

Like Donalds, Collins is adamant about forcing data centers to behave themselves vis \u00e0 vis water and energy, but says moratoriums are \u201cnot the American way\u201d \u2014 never mind that more than 20 localities have imposed them.<\/p>\n

Collins says he\u2019s running on a \u201cStop the Bullsh!t\u201d campaign. Need I point out that AI oligarchs are epically full of the, er, bovine waste product?<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter, of course: We can leave Collins and Fishback to snipe amongst themselves.<\/p>\n

Both are going to lose big.<\/p>\n

Bad bromance<\/h2>\n

A more interesting line of inquiry is what Gov. Ron DeSantis will decide about who should replace him.<\/p>\n

He has yet to endorse anyone.<\/p>\n

DeSantis used to like Donalds but then Donalds, knowing his home-state governor was about to enter the 2024 presidential race, endorsed Donald Trump instead.<\/p>\n

When Donalds tried to contact DeSantis, the governor wouldn\u2019t take his calls, instead trying to convince Trump he was \u201cunfit\u201d to be Florida\u2019s next chief executive.<\/p>\n

\n

The bromance is over. DeSantis is now in full diss-mode, pointing out Donalds can\u2019t claim significant accomplishments: \u201cYou\u2019ve got a guy like Byron, he just hasn\u2019t been a part of any of the victories that we\u2019ve had here over the left over these last years. He\u2019s just not been a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s not that DeSantis has overtly favored anyone else: He\u2019s snubbing his lieutenant governor (whom he chose) and pretending Fishback doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maybe he\u2019s too busy plotting another presidential run; maybe he\u2019s trying to figure out how to make a living once he\u2019s kicked out of his government housing; maybe he\u2019s freaked out at the thought he\u2019ll soon have no power; maybe he\u2019s struggling to decide which candidate he despises most.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not exactly behaving like a good Republican soldier. As one Tallahassee political insider said, \u201cRon is leaving without a lot of friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

He could influence the race if he chooses, but perhaps the three most likely candidates in the primary might prefer he ignores them.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m confident Donalds, Collins, and Fishback can find a way to alienate a lot of Floridians without his help.<\/p>\n
