Attorney General Todd Blanche made a number of controversial statements<\/u> Sunday during an appearance on NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d but one \u201ctelling\u201d remark appeared to fly completely under the radar, one that Zeteo\u2019s Martin Pengelly flagged as a major \u201cFreudian slip.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, Blanche refused<\/u> to pledge he’d act independently of the White House and declined<\/u> to rule out payments to Jan. 6 Capitol rioters. But it was when Welker pressed him on whether he’d defy President Donald Trump if asked to do something that “crosses an ethical or legal line” that Blanche let slip what Pengelly characterized as an unintentional admission.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president will never ask me to do something unethical or legal \u2013 or illegal,\u201d Blanche said. \u201cHe never has. He never will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blanche\u2019s claim, however, flies in the face of several legal experts who say that within a week of his confirmation, the newly confirmed attorney general already committed an illegal act by stumping for an ally of President Donald Trump\u2019s in New York last Friday, which former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance argued<\/u> was a blatant violation of the Hatch Act<\/u>, a 1938 federal law that prohibits federal officials from engaging in political activities while on duty.<\/p>\n

Pengelly argued that Blanche\u2019s \u201ctelling Freudian slip\u201d went largely unnoticed due to the \u201cstaggering corruption\u201d of the Trump administration flooding the news cycle, most notably the Trump family\u2019s success in receiving preliminary approval<\/u> to open their own bank.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so, in turn, will come some new story of appalling, apparently unstoppable corruption,\u201d Pengelly wrote in an analysis<\/u> published Monday in Zeteo. \u201cInevitably, the attorney general\u2019s latest appallingly cynical display of slavish devotion to his corrupt boss will be old news in its turn.\u201d<\/p>\n
