President Donald Trump’s comments about the Iran war and scaling back military exercises with ally South Korea amid his talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un were raising serious questions on Monday.<\/p>\n

CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes, who Trump had snapped at during an Oval Office press conference earlier, pointed to why the president’s comments were fueling concerns.<\/p>\n

“President Trump there saying<\/span> that he had had some kind of<\/span> communication or opened the door<\/span> to communication with Kim Jong<\/span> Un,” Holmes said. “And then shortly afterward,<\/span> this announcement that they were<\/span> scaling back the military<\/span> exercises with our ally, South<\/span> Korea.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Holmes compared the move to when <\/span>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the White<\/span> House, and it was anticipated he would request the U.S. help provide more missiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The day<\/span> before, President Trump talked<\/span> to President Putin,” she said. “And because<\/span> of that phone call the next day,<\/span> he denied giving Zelensky<\/span> Patriot missiles, citing<\/span> conversations that he had had<\/span> with Vladimir Putin. So this is<\/span> a real and justifiable question.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Holmes added that this has also triggered scrutiny over “the other crisis that he is facing” \u2014 the Iran war.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The<\/span> idea that North Korea has been<\/span> stockpiling illegal nuclear<\/span> weapons \u2014 what message is that<\/span> sending to Iran that he is<\/span> willing to support North Korea<\/span> in this, as they stockpile these<\/span> illegal nuclear weapons, or at<\/span> least look the other way?” Holmes asked. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Now,<\/span> all of this is coming at a point<\/span> where President Trump seems to<\/span> be at least foreign policy-wise,<\/span> completely spiraling,” she added. “And that<\/span> is likely due to what we are<\/span> seeing here at home. There is no<\/span> end in sight to this war in<\/span> Iran. <\/span>And in fact, President Trump is saying the same thing today that he said five months ago: that they want to negotiate, that they’re not going to come up with a deal that he likes, and that the baseline premise of this entire war is to make sure Iran doesn’t get nuclear weapons.”<\/p>\n

As the unpopular war has dragged on for five months, Americans have become more frustrated.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Now, part of<\/span> the reason he is likely having<\/span> so many issues, particularly<\/span> when it comes to Iran and<\/span> answering these questions, is<\/span> this poll, the poll that we did<\/span> at the end of last month in<\/span> which we asked voters<\/span> if they believe that the Iran<\/span> war was worth both the U.S.<\/span> lives lost and the financial<\/span> cost. And 74% of Americans said<\/span> no,” Holmes said. “Those polls are not lost on<\/span> this White House.”<\/span><\/p>\n
