President Donald Trump confused and angered onlookers Friday after announcing a plan<\/u> to combat surging beef prices<\/u>, but by Saturday, one Republican lawmaker believes they may have discovered the real motive behind the unorthodox arrangement.<\/p>\n

Trump revealed Friday morning that he had \u201cconcluded a deal\u201d that would see as much as 300,000 metric tons of ground beef \u2013 the equivalent of more than 2.6 billion quarter-pound hamburger patties \u2013 imported into the United States over a 90-day period. As part of the deal, Trump said his administration would waive tariffs on the imported goods, which would be sold at 25% below \u201ccurrent market prices.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked by a reporter Friday where the beef would be imported from, Trump declined<\/u> to answer.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want to say,” Trump said.<\/p>\n

A viral and lengthy post<\/u> on X written by a user who claims to be a medical student and former research scientist alleges the beef import plan of being a \u201cstealth bailout for meat companies,\u201d a theory that Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) appeared to agree with after sharing the post and asking<\/u> a pointed question of his own: \u201cCould this be considered a fast food bailout?\u201d<\/p>\n

Massie also singled out fast-food chains such as McDonald\u2019s, Wendy\u2019s and Burger King as potential beneficiaries of a surge of cheap ground beef, all three of which have been squeezed<\/u> by surging beef prices, with beef costs increasing by 48% as of March when compared with the previous 12 months.<\/p>\n

In a separate social media post<\/u>, Massie called Trump\u2019s plan a \u201cslap in the face to American cattlemen and consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDumping foreign beef in U.S. markets can temporarily lower prices but it won\u2019t incentivize American farmers to raise more beef. Bring back Country Of Origin Labels & pass my PRIME Act<\/u>,\u201d Massie wrote, referring to his bill that would loosen restrictions around the sale of meat directly to consumers.<\/p>\n
