A high-ranking Trump administration official was widely mocked Friday after being exposed for awarding an investigator a first look at government documents as a \u201cgift\u201d \u2013 only for the investigator to publicly release private texts after believing they were being \u201cset up\u201d by the \u201cDeep State.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a now-deleted<\/u> online post on X, Jessica Pounds<\/u> \u2013 an investigator and data scientist who assisted Elon Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE \u2013 claimed to \u201chave never been more angry in my life\u201d after alleging the \u201cDeep State\u201d had set her up \u201cto commit a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pounds claimed that she was sent a trove of documents to \u201cleak\u201d by a government source. Upon further inspection, Pounds said she believed leaking said documents would have gotten her \u201cin big big trouble.” She also released a screengrab of a text exchange.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe markings weren\u2019t crossed out,\u201d Pounds wrote in a social media post<\/u> on X. \u201cI consulted people and if this were a sanctioned leak \u2013 they would have just sent over email. They tried to entrap me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah B. Rogers, the under secretary for public diplomacy<\/u> at the State Department, took credit for being the individual texting Pounds in a dismissive response.<\/p>\n

\u201clol, these are my text messages and documents,\u201d Rogers wrote in a social media post<\/u> on X. “The ‘markings\u2019 are [Freedom of Information Act] redactions required even for voluntary disclosure.”<\/p>\n

The public exchange was soon met with online ridicule from countless critics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should sincerely thank God that these folks are better at stepping on rakes than the villainous s— they\u2019re supposed to be doing,\u201d wrote<\/u> Charlie Collier<\/u>, an editor at Wipf and Stock Publishers.<\/p>\n

Right-wing journalist Eric Spracklen argued<\/u> that the public blunder “inadvertently exposed\u201d how Nick Shirley \u2013 the right-wing influencer best known for his controversial Minnesota daycare fraud investigation<\/u> \u2013 \u201cgot his riveting Minnesota fraud story out of nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

And political writer Pedro Gonzalez issued a lengthy rebuke of the entire Trump administration over what he characterized as its incompetence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump-Vance administration fed a scoop to DataRepublican, basically the other Nick Shirley and one of its fake journalist mouthpieces,\u201d Gonzalez wrote in a social media post on X Friday night. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut DR is such a moron that she thought it was a plot to ensnare her by getting her to leak classified information. These people are like inept movie villains, complete with brain-dead henchmen. If this had been written as a scene in One Battle After Another<\/u>, people would have complained that it was too on the nose, too ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n
