NBC News and the Decision Desk called the race. <\/p>\n

Graham, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, was appointed to serve out the remainder of her brother’s term, but President Donald Trump stunned the South Carolina political class by endorsing her for a permanent seat.<\/p>\n

She advanced to the runoff amid a crowded field of challengers, but her margin was not decisive, fueling speculation of a close, competitive race.<\/p>\n

Afterward, Graham drew heavy negative press attention after her disastrous debate performance against Norman, where she admitted she didn’t know much about the geopolitics of Taiwan or foreign policy in general \u2014 an issue that was a major passion of her late brother and one U.S. senators frequently debate.<\/p>\n

Prior to Tuesday evening, the Republican consensus was that Graham was headed for a loss.<\/p>\n

The race was a significant test for Trump’s remaining clout among primary voters. Many of the president’s endorsed candidates have suffered humiliating defeats in recent weeks, from former MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell getting thumped in the nomination for Minnesota governor, to a congressional candidate in Michigan losing to an opponent who wasn’t even actively campaigning.<\/p>\n
