A Republican congressman got fact-checked on live television for casting blame for the economy away from President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) appeared Wednesday on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” where he was asked about the Republican message on affordability heading into November’s midterm election.<\/p>\n

“I think<\/span> we need to remind people exactly<\/span> how we got into this situation,” the GOP congressman said.<\/span> “You recall during the Biden<\/span> administration, we had inflation<\/span> up to 9 percent and higher gas prices<\/span> were over $5 a gallon, and so<\/span> the mess was created by the<\/span> Democrats. It’s really <\/span>funny. The Democrats,<\/span> you always got to listen<\/span> to what they’re saying because<\/span> what they’re saying is what<\/span> they’re doing, and so<\/span> affordability, unaffordability<\/span> was really created by the<\/span> Democrats, and we’re going to<\/span> go back to 9 percent inflation, and <\/span>gas prices to<\/span> go over $5 a gallon because<\/span> remember, they want to do the<\/span> Green New Deal.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“They want to<\/span> really hamper our oil<\/span> and gas industry so that energy<\/span> costs skyrocket,” Giminez added. “Then they want<\/span> to do out-of-control spending<\/span> like they did when they were in<\/span> power, and so all of that,<\/span> you know, we got to remind p<\/span>eople that we’re not about<\/span> that.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Host Dana Bash cut in with a fact check on the Florida Republican’s claims \u2013 and a reminder of the current year.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I just need to get in there<\/span> because, certainly, the<\/span> affordability crisis in 2024 was<\/span> a big part of the reason<\/span> President Trump won,” Bash said. “But I<\/span> don’t need to remind you that<\/span> since he has been in office,<\/span> the economic troubles, never<\/span> mind sort of the way that it<\/span> looks on the statistics charts,<\/span> but how people feel, is not<\/span> great, and part of the reason is<\/span> the president’s policy on<\/span> tariffs, and also the<\/span> president’s policy in the war<\/span> in Iran. “<\/span><\/p>\n

“I understand that it’s politically imperative for Republicans to go back to the Biden administration,” she added. “But [Trump’s]<\/span> been in office for almost two<\/span> years!”<\/span><\/p>\n
