Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pushed out the Army chief of staff back in the spring, reportedly because he refused to drop an investigation into a helicopter flyby at Kid Rock’s house, and a former staffer to President Donald Trump said the episode raised alarming questions.<\/p>\n

The Pentagon chief abruptly fired Gen. Randy George in April after the four-star general was told by his own second-in-command, Gen. Chris LaNeve, that Hegseth wanted the probe ended, and former White House communications director Mike Dubke said the rock star’s proximity was irrelevant.<\/p>\n

“I’m going to take a step back<\/span> here,” Dubke said. “I think the whole tying<\/span> this into Kid Rock is the wrong<\/span> way to look at it. [This]<\/span> is really the chilling of frank<\/span> and honest speech within the<\/span> Pentagon. We want that. I think<\/span> the downside of what we’ve seen<\/span> here and the real harm that<\/span> Hegseth would be bringing with<\/span> this, is chilling of that<\/span> speech.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“If you are a junior<\/span> general who is rising up through<\/span> the ranks,” Dubke added, “and you see everyone<\/span> that’s above you get tossed<\/span> because they had the audacity of<\/span> telling civilian leadership<\/span> something they didn’t want to<\/span> hear, what is that going to do<\/span> to you that is going to make you<\/span> probably shut your mouth a<\/span> little bit more and not give the<\/span> honest assessment that we need,<\/span> that the civilian leadership<\/span> needs, that the administration<\/span> needs to hear. That is what’s<\/span> worrying to me.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is also on the way out, Dubke said, and he pinned the blame on Hegseth’s paranoia.<\/span><\/p>\n

“If Driscoll is out, and<\/span> the reports are that he and<\/span> Hegseth butt heads, and he may,<\/span> you know, the scuttlebutt in<\/span> Washington was he was the<\/span> obvious choice to replace<\/span> Hegseth,” Dubke said. “I’m sure Hegseth is<\/span> purging him. These are the<\/span> things that disturb me because I<\/span> want civilian leadership over an<\/span> honest military that will tell<\/span> the civilian leadership things<\/span> they don’t want to hear. They<\/span> don’t have to do it, but they<\/span> should hear it.”<\/span><\/p>\n
