The devastating flash floods<\/u> in Nepal this week that killed at least 670 people<\/u> and left around 3,000 missing \u2014 including 90 Americans<\/u> \u2014 might have claimed fewer lives if not for the actions of the Trump administration, former USAID disaster-response chief Jeremy Konyndyk suggested on Saturday.<\/p>\n

A series of catastrophic flash floods hit Nepal near its border with China on Wednesday causing unprecedented destruction. The event is believed to have been caused by a glacier collapse<\/u> in the Himalayas.<\/p>\n

Konyndyk, who led USAID\u2019s response to the COVID-19 pandemic under the Biden administration, raised an unsettling question as to whether the Trump administration and its Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, may have crippled locals\u2019 ability to adequately prepare for such a disaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cDOGE famously used keyword searches<\/u> for terms like \u2018climate\u2019 to terminate federal grants,\u201d Konyndyk wrote, referring to the DOGE-led blitz to gut funding for USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong the victims: a collab<\/u> between USAID and NASA for flood prediction, early warning, disaster readiness, glacier inventories, and mapping dangerous glacial lakes\u2026 in Nepal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spearheaded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, DOGE oversaw around $60 billion<\/u> in cuts to U.S. foreign aid under the Trump administration, leaving \u201cfew surviving<\/u>\u201d USAID projects in its wake. Among the USAID programs Konyndyk said was affected was SERVIR<\/u>, a program that produced detailed and advanced flood forecasting with \u201cdays lead time\u201d that \u201callows people to plan and prepare for [floods].\u201d The program also specifically monitored the \u201cpotentially dangerous glacial lakes of Nepal.\u201d<\/p>\n

A notice from NASA supports Konyndyk\u2019s assertion that SERVIR was impacted by DOGE cuts.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarlier this month USAID notified SERVIR partners that they have terminated all agreements and contracts with NASA and the SERVIR network,\u201d the notice, published in late March of 2025, reads. \u201cWithout the partnership with USAID, NASA cannot continue the SERVIR program.\u201d<\/p>\n
