The Trump administration\u2019s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a recently that has public health advocates sounding the alarm, The Guardian reported<\/u> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe political people at the EPA changed the science to get the outcome they want,\u201d said Maria Doa<\/u>, the senior director of chemicals policy at the Environmental Defense Fund and former EPA scientist, speaking with The Guardian. \u201cThis isn\u2019t the first time. They\u2019ve been doing that pretty consistently under Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the assessment, EPA officials found that TBBPA<\/u> \u2014 a highly toxic flame retardant used to reduce the flammability of plastics and other consumer products \u2014 was “unlikely to be used in fabrics and textiles.\u201d Furthermore, the assessment included language that advocates described as an attempt to \u201cdownplay the risks\u201d of the \u201chighly toxic and profitable chemical.\u201d<\/p>\n

And yet, despite the EPA\u2019s claims in its assessment \u2014 which \u201cwill be used to set regulations\u201d for TBBPA \u2014 advocates say the agency came to its conclusions using data from industries poised to profit from loosened regulations around the toxic flame retardant.<\/p>\n

In some cases, the EPA\u2019s claims \u2014 notably that TBBPA is \u201cunlikely\u201d to be used in clothing and textiles \u2014 were outright false, argued the nonprofit organization Earthjustice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of underestimation of the risk, and they\u2019re ignoring different exposure pathways\u2026 and we\u2019re definitely seeing them cite industry sources,\u201d said Lakendra Barajas, a senior attorney for Earthjustice, speaking with The Guardian.<\/p>\n

The EPA itself also “contradicted” its own findings, with a separate assessment finding that “TBBPA is still widely used in textiles, including 96 types of children\u2019s clothing,” The Guardian noted.<\/p>\n

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has labeled TBBPA a probable carcinogen<\/u>, and further studies have linked the chemical to \u201chormone disruption, brain damage, immune system toxicity and developmental harms in children, including to the reproductive and nervous systems,\u201d The Guardian\u2019s report reads. The chemical, The Guardian notes, is \u201cespecially\u201d dangerous to \u201csmall children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall molecule TBBPA, as used in plastics and in consumer products, should be restricted,\u201d said Arlene Blum<\/u>, an environmental health scientist and author, speaking with The Guardian. \u201cIt can get into humans and contribute to cancer and behavioral harm. Infants and toddlers who crawl in the dust and put their hands in their mouths are especially vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n
