A former aide to President Donald Trump questioned why his administration was launching a criminal investigation of E. Jean Carroll, who successfully sued him twice for sexual assault and defamation, just months before crucial elections.<\/p>\n

A jury found Trump liable in 2023 for sexually abusing the writer and columnist decades earlier, and he was also found liable for defamation over comments he made about her on social media.<\/p>\n

Former White House director of strategic communications Alyssa Farah Griffin told “CNN News Central” the Department of Justice perjury investigation of Carroll, announced Wednesday, was a bemusing mistake.<\/p>\n

“<\/span>I will<\/span> never understand why this<\/span> administration wants to put some<\/span> of the worst associations of the<\/span> president back in the headlines,” Griffin said. “<\/span>Most of us have kind of<\/span> forgotten about the E. Jean<\/span> Carroll suit, the allegations,<\/span> what he was ultimately found<\/span> liable for, and now it puts it<\/span> front and center.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s very<\/span> similar to the Jan. 6 cases,<\/span> DOJ wants to keep rehashing<\/span> them,” she added. “But then Republicans also<\/span> say, ‘Oh, Democrats keep talking<\/span> about Jan. 6.’ No, this<\/span> president keeps talking about<\/span> the election lies, Jan. 6.<\/span> So from purely a standpoint of<\/span> wanting to focus on his domestic<\/span> agenda and move forward, this<\/span> makes zero sense.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-host John Berman asked what the administration got out of pursuing possible prosecution against Carroll.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Absolutely nothing \u2013 it’s not<\/span> a headline that they want, and<\/span> we’ve seen a number of these<\/span> cases go forward,” Griffin said. “James Comey<\/span> and others, where they<\/span> overreach. DOJ was not able to<\/span> get the outcome that they<\/span> wanted, and I suspect this will<\/span> be a similar case, not<\/span> from a legal perspective, but<\/span> based on what we know, this<\/span> should be the last thing Donald<\/span> Trump wants to talk about in the<\/span> twilight of his presidency. He<\/span> should be focusing on the <\/span>economy, gas prices, the war in<\/span> Iran, not re-litigating this.”<\/span><\/p>\n
