Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) left critics dumbfounded on Friday after suggesting that James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for Senate from Texas, would engage in religious child sacrifice.<\/p>\n

The official social media account on X for the Democratic Party promoted Talarico\u2019s candidacy this week with a simple message<\/u>: \u201cJames Talarico is the only candidate who will put you first.\u201d Lee, known for his controversial online remarks<\/u>, issued a response just hours later.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames Talarico will put you first\u2026 On the altar to Moloch,\u201d Lee wrote<\/u>, referencing the ancient figure of Moloch mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and associated with child sacrifice<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Lee\u2019s social media post also included an animated image depicting a child being sacrificed to an ancient deity \u2014 a post that left several onlookers appalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing to see here, just a Republican Senator accusing a Democratic Senate candidate of child sacrifice,\u201d wrote<\/u> journalist and former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan on Friday. \u201cBut, hey, don\u2019t you dare criticize [President Donald] Trump as that could lead to political violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Catherine Young, a staff writer for The Bulwark and columnist for Newsday, also flagged what she characterized as Lee\u2019s hypocrisy given the GOP\u2019s increasingly frequent<\/u> condemnation of \u201cinflammatory rhetoric\u201d as a cause for political violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought demonizing (literally!) political opponents was bad and incites violence?\u201d Young asked in a social media post<\/u> on X to her more than 70,000 followers.<\/p>\n

Journalist-turned-lawyer Charlie Johnson described<\/u> Lee\u2019s remarks as \u201ccertifiable lunacy,\u201d and Eric Michael Garcia, the D.C. bureau chief for The Independent and MS NOW columnist, argued that the Utah Republican was unlikely to face any consequences for his inflammatory remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, Mike Lee will not be held accountable for these outrageous comments accusing a Democrat of sacrificing people to Satan because he refuses to speak to the press,\u201d Garcia wrote Friday in a social media post<\/u> on X to his more than 44,000 followers. \u201cHe’s just thoroughly pickled his brain online.\u201d<\/p>\n
