David Rothkopf, global affairs columnist for The Daily Beast and a former international trade official in the Clinton White House, argued during a new episode of “The Daily Beast Podcast” that Jared Kushner’s secret meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) signals that Trump is terrified of being impeached again. Kushner wouldn’t have met with Jeffries unless the White House is preparing for Democrats to regain control of the House of Representatives after the midterms.

“I think Trump’s terrified,” Rothkopf said. “Just as he sends Jared to deal with the Iranians and Jared to deal with the Russians, when he’s got some big issue, he sends Jared.”

Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, has been a central figure in the administration even though he doesn’t hold an official government job. Kushner has worked with special envoy Steve Witkoff on a number of international issues, including peace negotiations to end the war against Iran, which is weighing on Trump’s approval rating.

Outside of diplomatic work, Kushner also seems to have a more personal job within the Trump White House.

“He really doesn’t want to be impeached again. There are a lot of Democrats who are like, what’s the point? But I think Trump sees the point,” Rothkopf said. “He knows how devastating that would be to his administration, to his reputation.”
