Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) appeared Wednesday on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” where he was asked about the Republican message on affordability heading into November’s midterm election.
“I think we need to remind people exactly how we got into this situation,” the GOP congressman said. “You recall during the Biden administration, we had inflation up to 9 percent and higher gas prices were over $5 a gallon, and so the mess was created by the Democrats. It’s really funny. The Democrats, you always got to listen to what they’re saying because what they’re saying is what they’re doing, and so affordability, unaffordability was really created by the Democrats, and we’re going to go back to 9 percent inflation, and gas prices to go over $5 a gallon because remember, they want to do the Green New Deal.”
“They want to really hamper our oil and gas industry so that energy costs skyrocket,” Giminez added. “Then they want to do out-of-control spending like they did when they were in power, and so all of that, you know, we got to remind people that we’re not about that.”

Host Dana Bash cut in with a fact check on the Florida Republican’s claims – and a reminder of the current year.
“I just need to get in there because, certainly, the affordability crisis in 2024 was a big part of the reason President Trump won,” Bash said. “But I don’t need to remind you that since he has been in office, the economic troubles, never mind sort of the way that it looks on the statistics charts, but how people feel, is not great, and part of the reason is the president’s policy on tariffs, and also the president’s policy in the war in Iran. “
“I understand that it’s politically imperative for Republicans to go back to the Biden administration,” she added. “But [Trump’s] been in office for almost two years!”
