Rep. Tom Kean Jr. built a career on staying out of the spotlight, but his quiet strategy may be the very thing dragging him under, according to a new report.

The two-term New Jersey Republican long coasted on light national scrutiny and a golden last name, as his father, Tom Kean Sr., is a former governor still fondly remembered by many older voters, Politico reported Thursday.
But the son’s low profile cracked wide open when he vanished from Congress for four months to treat a then-undisclosed illness he later revealed was severe depression.
Democrats who spent years griping about his dodged town halls and scarce debates suddenly found themselves loaded with ammunition.
“Kean’s tried-and-true strategy has been to remain inoffensively beneath the radar. And now because people are paying close attention to him, his story doesn’t hold up to scrutiny,” said progressive activist Sue Altman, who lost to Kean by about five points in 2024.

Kean, back on the trail and knocking doors, insists he’s simply a “private person by nature,” but the optics keep biting. His campaign barred a New York Times reporter from a fundraiser with House Speaker Mike Johnson at a district golf club, and a club employee called police on her in the parking lot, according to the report.
Now Kean faces Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot in the mold of newly elected Gov. Mikie Sherrill. He’s agreed to just one debate, and stayed mum on a proposed ICE facility in his district.
Johnson has defended him anyway.
“There are show ponies and there are workhorses,” the speaker said. “This guy defines workhorse.”
